FAMO (15mm)
« on: December 24, 2018, 03:15:33 AM »
Here's the 1:100 scale SdKfz 9 FAMO I printed the other day. It's a quick, basic paint job; it's never going to be a show-piece, and it's not likely to end up on the table a hell of a lot, so my laziness triumphed and I didn't put a lot of effort into it. It'll do, until I feel more motivation.

I think you may be a bit harsh on yourself.  I think its as good as some 20mm resin kits I have seen or bought.

They look pretty good.  If not really satisfied with them, the blow them up and use them as terrain pieces or something.

I designed this crane module to slip into the cargo bay. The actual recovery vehicle wouldn't have had any sides, but adding this will at least make it look a bit more recoveryish.

I haven't printed it yet, except for the floor piece to ensure that it would fit snugly in place, and I think it might be a bit of a tricky print.

Here it is, in place in the cargo bay of the FAMO. FDM is not the ideal medium to be printing this sort of thing in, a DLP or SLA resin printer would give much cleaner results. However, this will do for the purpose, which is to identify it as a recovery vehicle on the wargames table.

Very nice.

Why do you consider other resins to be more suitable? Not that I foresee a printer in my future, but is of interest.

Very nice.

Why do you consider other resins to be more suitable? Not that I foresee a printer in my future, but is of interest.

The DLP and SLA processes, both of which use light to cure photosensitive resin, are capable of much finer resolution than FDP (Fused Deposition Modeling) which uses extruded molten plastic.

A characteristic side effect of FDP is "stringing", in which a hair-like thread of molten plastic is pulled from the nozzle as it moves from one point to the next. It's very difficult to eliminate completely, especially in a model like this that has a lattice-like structure, and it all needs to be trimmed away after printing is completed.

The models produced by DLP/SLA are cleaner and can be more highly detailed, though they also need a bit of post-processing. The photosensitive resin itself is quite brittle, but there are additives that can be used to make it more flexible and resilient.

Very nice work again. Having looked at the BF model; I may well look for a printed model in the New Year once everyone's back in the swing of things.
I was looking at the version with the spade but your crane completed the model nicely.

I've put the crane module up on Thingiverse at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3319816. It is designed specifically to fit m_bergman's FAMO model.
