SF Vehicles in 25mm/28mm, 15mm, and 6mm?
« on: December 28, 2018, 09:01:31 PM »
Hi folks,

I would like to be able to field the same SF force in all three major scales. Fortunately for me, Ground Zero Games make infantry in all three scales. As these are all well-proportioned and a nice mix of nationalities and men and women -- hooray! (FWIW, Alternative Armies's "Ion Age" range at least has one force in all three scales although you have to look at the alternative-armies.com page for 6mm and theionage.com pages for 15mm and 28mm. )

Vehicles seem to be a bit of a problem, however. AFAICT:
  • GZG sold the rights for their 25mm vehicle range to Daemonscape.
  • While I'm mostly good for tanks, ATVs, etc., GZG seems to have discontinued a bunch of civilian vehicles -- cargo trucks, flatbeds, etc. -- that Daemonscape still carries in 25mm.
So. My question is: Do any of you know of a company that has a nice range of the same SF vehicles in all three scales?
Cheers,

-- David

It's still in the Kickstarter fulfilment phase, so not quite directly available yet, but Kore Aeronautics have a small range of vehicles available in all 3 scales.  They also sell them as home 3D printing files.

Thanks for the heads up.

Errmmm ... I feel like a dope for asking this. But do Kore Aeronautics have their own web page? [EDIT: All I get from this "storefront" is a "bad gateway" message.]

I've just double checked and it's not working for me at the moment either, so probably not you being a dope.   ;)

At the moment the only thing they have for direct sale is their LARC VTOL (kind of a Space Huey).  I assume they'll add the other stuff to their website (and got it working again) in due course.

Taking GW into consideration ?

A lot of Epic scale vehicles had their 1:600 equivalents done as fan projects (IIRC printable in 3d), and there are 15mm eqivalents.

Have you thought of using vehicles from WW2 gaming?

You'd get trucks, and tanks for sure... even some APCs (leave turrets off tanks you aren't going to use... German Panther would work well for that).

Just paint them sci-fi and maybe swap a few weapons... sorted :) .

There are micro-scale, 15mm and 28mm versions of a wide range too :) .

It's certainly not a bad idea ... in fact, it's pretty good. But how to give them a little sci-fi "oomph"? (Weird camo patterns? 40K-style liveries?)

Hmmmm ... I'll have a poke around Shapeways and see what I can turn up.

The main weapons would be the obvious options for adding a bit of sci-fi... and then add a few bits of gubbins on the outside (plasticard armour, here and there)... then a sci-fi paint job... sorted :) .

Just a few added random panels would be all that was required so it would be easy to replicate in all of the scales. Weapons could just be simple tubes and rods (just a bit more exaggerated than the historical versions)... nothing too complicated.

Somewhere I might still have a late 'eighties conversion of a Matchbox M24 Chaffee to a grav tank (for 15mm). I replaced the tracks with something from my bits box and replaced the gin barrel with a tapering tube.

I think it sat on a GW flight stand.

Modern stuff would work as well. I do not know if anyone does equivalent models in 15/6mm of Empress's PLA range.

RE: Converting WW2-era vehicles -- I dimly recall Ashley Watkins (who used to edit/ write a mecha fanzine in the 1980s/ 1990s) writing something about the sci-fi feel of Soviet Cold War era amphibious vehicles. Hmmmm ... I wonder if there's a company that makes some of these in all three scales.

(Nice pics on this "War History Online" page.)

[Apologies for the thread Necromancy--but it didn't seem worth starting a new thread for one new find. Hope this is okay! :D ]

Just a heads up--I got a lead on another company called Nuclear Shrimp. You need to drill down to their shop to see that they do all three scales though.

Have you considered something like late WWII or Weird War vehicles and possibly adapting them by adding hoverskirts like the Hammer's Slammers vehicles?

Some of the German SPG types, although distinctive, look quite possible - thinking of vehicles like the hetzer.

If you wanted something bigger there's the jagdtiger, sturmtiger or even the maus

Also, the German stuff is probably the most widely available in almost any scale

The other consideration with WWII kits is that they are available in a lot of different scales, and you can alter things by eg using a 1/72 vehicle alongside 15mm (if you want it to be large) or alongside 28mm if you want a small vehicle (or even a large droid?).

A few years back I chanced across some very cheap 1/72 snap-together kits of the Swedish S tank, and opted for those, straight from the box, alongside my 25mm SF figures.

I picked up a box of 1/72 PSC T-55's to convert to near future or future hover/grav armor. These would be used in 15mm scale. I went with 1/72 for beefier armor as I am looking scifi instead of using 15mm scale armor.
Next will be 1/72 STuG's. Blame Dreamforge for that one.
