BSC2019 McMordains Sylvaneth Wyldwood
« on: January 02, 2019, 08:29:45 PM »
Well since I need at least 3 Sylvaneth Wyldwood for my AoS Sylvaneth army, I could use the BSC to motivate me.
I have no idea to how to do it though, without using many commercial parts...

Use actual sticks for the basis of the trees!

Will be free, and you can go for huge, gnarled, weird-shaped ones.

That is one of the methods I want to try, but I don't have twigs stored and we just had about 10 cm of snow... It's not the best time to look for them.

Anyway I will use this picture as inspiration

In gaming terms the Sylvaneth Wyldwood is 1-3 Citadel wood which has 3 trees per base.
The plan is to have 2 regular trees that can be used for other games and one that is more like the trees with the faces on the picture.

I cut out four bases for the Wyldwoods. I simply draw around the plastic citadel wood base, and changed the shape here and there. Having identical bases is boring, but I do not wanted to change it too much, because my opponents might complain (not likely but better safe than sorry :) )

The trees mostly will be sculpted with air dry modelling clay (which I have to buy somewhere yet) onto an armature. So far I made one with wire and one from paper tubes.

I want to use the trees separately as well so they will be on 50 mm bases.
I will stop here until I get the clay. I also need to look for stuff that could be used as foliage.

What about tissue paper and PVA glue, and a hot glue gun to flesh out the trees?

That could work too, good idea, thanks. :) If sculpting with the air drying clay does not work out, I will do it that way.
I got the clay so I will give it a go tonight.

I didn't have the time to do much, but I made some progress last Sunday.

I added air clay to the armatures and thought of a way to make the canopies.

The styrofoam half spheres will have wire support as smaller branches and I can glue the foliage to them.

I worked on the wire armature as well, but I don't like the result. For "normal" trees I will stick with what is commercially available.
For this competition I will make the three Sylvaneth tree and a base.

I will need to fill up the cracks on the trunk, rough it up a little so it would have some bark like texture and add some detail to make it Sylvanethy.

On the second one I will try out the tissue+PVA+hot glue gun combo, as I don't like to work with the clay.

More work done since last time.

Second tree made with carton tubes, pipe cleaners and glue gun...

...texture added...

...and some plastic details scavenged from my Sylvaneth bitz box.

And the third tree made the same way.

Also I didn't really like the first version and I was thinking in Age of Sigmar, the realms have some really weird places, especially toward the edge of the realm.
So some more outlandish trees or plants wouldn't be that much out of place.

I always liked this place in the Titan A.E. cartoon

and got a bunch of styrofoam balls to make the canopy of the trees.

So I made this:

Still needs a lot of work, but I like it a lot.

Ahoy!

While I did not reached my original goal of making Wyldwoods for my army I did manage to make two nice looking trees. Well one and a half, as I probably cannot finish the second tree till the deadline tomorrow.

Here is a pic of the primed second tree. The first was painted before I realized that I should have made a photo of it as well...

I forgot to post this earlier.

Both tree is painted now.
For making the foliage I added styrene clumps to the end of the branches. Those were covered with pva and tissue then painted green. After it dried, I glued foliage material to it. The added weight made it unstable though, so I glued them onto a cd.
I was not sure how it will look so I only did one of them. It turned out to be better looking than I thought.
So one tree is done, except for a few touch ups here and there. The second has the styrene clumps added. I made some photos of it, but as the rest of it is painted I will post them once the competition is over.
I will do the pva+tissue treatment tonight, and if I have the time tomorrow I will do the painting and gluing of the foliage material. I have some things to do on Sunday afternoon so it will not be finished in time probably.
Most likely my entry will be only one tree.

I like the movement and variety of branches, well done.
