Teddy bear fur and modular dungeons questions
« on: January 03, 2019, 07:34:41 PM »
While on holiday I gave some thought as to what I wanted to do for my gaming over the year.  For a long time I have been uncertain as to what type of gaming surface I wanted, but I am now firmly decided on teddy bear fur.  As I lack patience and often lack time I thought about buying a Killing Fields mat rather than making my own.  Has anyone purchased one of these and if so, what are they like (other than furry).

I also need some type of dungeon layout for possibly three or four games.  I have looked into the card stock option but from what I have read these take a long time to put together and also take time to set up.
As I will only rarely use a dungeon setting I don't particularly want to pay for resin modular dungeons and I don't own a 3D printer to print my own.
Given the whole patience and time thing, I was wondering about using foam board to make some modular rooms.  Rather than being modular bits of wall I thought about modules of several entire rooms and corridoors that can fit together.  Has anyone done something similar or have a better idea?

Have you considered the 2.5 D tile system - The DMG has great tutorials on how to build tiles from cardboard for next to no cost: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLw-XImXo4zfOcrcfnk1Rtg8xumInutBzy

I put a set together with only a couple of hours work. There are great tutorials for doors, walls and traps etc. - a really nice system.

Cheers

Another thumbs up for the DMG tiles on corrugated cardboard or foam board.  If you use black foamboard, then painting of the stone pattern is easy.  Skip the walls altogether and it can go quickly.

Another alternative is TT Combat's MDF Dungeon Sets A and B without walls:

https://ttcombat.com/collections/fantasy-realms/products/modular-dungeon-tiles

No cutting, but you would need to basecoat the MDF before painting the stones.

I started with printed color dungeon tiles mounted with poster tack on foamboard, but moved onto the TT Combat tiles for a more permanent option.  However, the printed tiles give you a lot more flexibility.

BTW, I used the DMG technique with a sponge to paint my TT Combat MDF tiles, too.

I made some quick and dirty dungeon tiles using black foamcore stuck to self stick vinyl tiles.

Very quick to make - cut foam and stick to tile, peel it then scribe your pattern, quick undercoat of cheap acrylic + white glue, then paint, dry brush, wash, drybrush again!  They are surprisingly sturdy, I made loads :)

Doors are thick card superglued to thick blister plastic, columns etc from corks and bases. have also added angled corridors, stairs, and other stuff.

Dungeon tiles are easy to make or buy and offer the most versatility.

I love all the variety! I just picked up a Proxxon table cutter and hope to whip up a batch soon.

Ha ha, was waiting for the pink insulation sheets.  In New Zealand these are as rare as hen's teeth so ,unfortunately, I won't go down this track as much as I would like to.

Thanks for all the good suggestions.  I have a plan germinating in my mind already......

Still no one commented on the fur.  I think I might just have to buy the mat and see how it goes. I just don't think I would ever get around to making my own mat.  It is not cheap at approx $100 (US) including postage, but might save me on all the swearing and cursing that would go into making my own :D

There was a really nice teddy bear fur board on one of the threads recently, it might have been a Star Wars game (I vaguely remember a reference to Rogue One).

I bought a Killing Fields mat on Ebay, then discovered the guy who sells them is in the next town over LOL. It's pretty good quality overall, I was concerned about the fur length but 28mm figures stand on it fine. The color of mine is much greener and darker than the pics they have. Not sure if that's normal or just a one off. Like you I knew I could make one cheaper but also knew I never would.

Grimm,    He is in a little town called New Windsor, 7 miles south of Westminister. I lived there for 14 years. He sometimes comes to the HMGS cons, sets up with that big terrain dealer. Me I'm in Keymar now. It's even smaller than New Windsor   lol
