Hat into the ring, as the last time was too much fun.

Because most of you folks either don't live in the tropics or are not botanists, here is what I am proposing to model.

...another view of a different patch

Some folks call these "walking trees"

cheers

No these trees are not found in inundated areas. They will even grow in poor upland soils or inn areas that are mostly bare limestone.

Interesting - there really is huge amount of scope in this year's contest.

Started on the build tonight, first the base and then started on some of the leaves that will be needed. As usual for my gaming table I start with a cork pad. This one is backed with plastic rather than mdf so it was easy to trim to an organic shape and bevel the edges so that it will sit flush to the board.

As I discussed previously pandanus is often found in rough limestone areas so I decided to take some cork tile scraps and "build" some karst limestone formations. I haven't decided yet but I wil probably hit these later with some dilute spackle to make them smoother.

Here is the rough base.

I then turned toward the pandanus leaves, cutting and straightening lengths of florist wire.

The wire is then laid out on thick masking tape

WIth another piece laid on top and all gone over so that everything sticks together well.

I trimmed the ends and decided that was enough for the night.

Now off for a well deserved drink.

Peculiar looking trees, I've been thinking about making some mangroves so this is really interesting.

Back at it today. I trimmed and shaped the leaves that I started the other night. Originally, they were tape bands with wires sticking out. Now they are individual leaves ready to assemble in groups and paint.

I also started on the pandanus trunks and root structures. This is simply paper that is rolled tightly and glued. Here is the first batch. I will probably need to make more, especially for more additional aerial roots.

Nice. The leaves will also have nice textures.

Thanks fellas! I smoothed out my "limestone outcrop" with some thinned spackle and started assembling two of my pandanus trees.

Then started building them up on the base. The lower portions and root structure are only about half finished. I figure that I will put in another larger tree and then have to really get going on more leaves.
