Your 2019 hobby plans (thank you Conquistador)
« on: January 09, 2019, 09:41:12 AM »
Hello everyone, I hope this finds you happy and well.

Conquistador started the below thread and a bunch of us listed our hobby goals for 2017: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=94279.msg1163747#msg1163747

I looked back on this today and thought it might be fun to post our revised goals for 2019 - I'll start!

2017 GOALS

Complete small 28mm sci fi infantry force to represented grizzled local defence forces of some grimdark far future world  ::) DONE
Round out a small 28mm cultist force. DONE
•Add flagship and massed escorts to my Ork Battlefleet Gothic force. Erm... 50%? The escorts I managed but the flagship continues to intimidate me from it's dusty shelf  :'( I did, however, build 6 more Ork light cruisers to add to this force!
•Add several cruisers, multiple escorts and make some minor touch ups to my Imperial BFG forces. Ha!!! No... While I now have all the ships I want for my force in hand there was zero painting done. I did manage to convert numerous cruisers to how I wanted them but the bulk of escorts remains, and no painting was achieved here  :-I
Add more survivors, military types and zombies to my 28mm zombie apocalypse DONE A frenzy of 28mm in 2018 left me with many more zombies and apoc types than before
Paint up BFG Necron fleet SOLD While not done at least they're off the hobby mountain - it came to a point where I realised I needed to rationalise my goals and having all these fleets was just too much for my storage and indeed my sanity
Paint up BFG Tau fleet using GZG UNSC models SOLD
Paint up giant Martian Tripod from Rebel Minis using base as a mini diorama SOLD Okay, again I realised the error of my ways and had to admit defeat - this little chap went to a more loving home.

CONCLUSION

I painted 66 miniatures in 2017. That is nothing compared to the frankly stupendous output of certain grizzled (and grizzly) LAF users here, but I was happy with it. 2018, however, was my most productive year for painting - 82 figures painted in total! Very pleased with that, and I have some nice completed forces to play with (nothing is ever really complete, I know I know...). I actually only have 22 28mm scale models on my to do pile for 2019 so far, which I am very happy about. I'm pleased that I bit the bullet and rationalised a bunch of my collection, it helped with my output considerably. In hindsight I probably took on too much to start with  lol

2019 goals

Paint BFG Ork Flagship and light cruiser contingent (7 models)
Paint BFG Imperial merchant ships, escort and cruiser groups (14 models)
Paint BFG Eldar pirate fleet (I was weak! They were cheap darnit, yes I know they weren't mentioned anywhere earlier... (something like 20+ models)
Paint the remainder of my 28mm sci fi and zombie stuff (22 models)

This year is very much going to be a spaceship year. What are your goals for 2019?

Best wishes to all of you and sorry if this was a bit long winded!

Oh my goodness I am a cretin, sorry general!! I have edited it accordingly but I can't believe I did that (actually yes, yes I can believe it...).

So that means that I was still fighting that particular lead mountain into 2018, not just 2017...  o_o o_o o_o

As far as 2019 goes, I can only look at my current "to do" pile (and it is a pile, many piles in fact...) and groan. Still, some broad goals.

2019

* Improve my Sculpting skills. The biggee.

* Put together a set of miniatures and rules for a game set in the Sunless Sea setting (boats / terrain/ monsters).

* Complete a basic force representing Jihadists in Syria (complete at least half of the miniatures collected to date - without them being donors for another project...).

* Complete all outstanding terrain projects from 2018 (7 x industrial buildings)

* Complete all outstanding other modern miniatures projects from 2018 (3 x BTR-80 / 2 x MT-LB/ 2 x BMD)

* Get back into Frostgrave - complete existing dungeon tile set - produce secondary tile set (Dwarven ruins, etc)

* Play more Modern games (take many snazzy pictures)

So mostly finishing off stuff from 2018 (that's just the priority things listed, sitting at the cap of the to do pile, the rest are more like a permafrost...). I'm staking my career on getting into sculpting professionally, so that's my main concern for the start of the year right now (and we'll see how things are by its end).

For the short term at least I have more time on my hands than I did last year, so here's hoping I can take out a chunk of this and just coast till the New Year. ;)

No problem. Interesting to see what I put for 2017

"I am intending to start a 28mm AWI British army to face my Americans which are finished (unless I decide to add another brigade). It will be based on the Southern Theatre using mostly Perry metals. I am to just buy a unit at a time to avoid a depressing lead pile metaphorically weighing me down  lol" - Cheated and bought my mates army!  :)

"I still have many 28mm Greeks hoplites, Byzantines and Arabs and WW1 Brits still to do." Sold the Arabs. Hoplites are about 75% complete. Byzantines 66% though no pressure as I am not gaming with them. The WW1 Brits are all finished and I have since painted up 90 odd WW1 Russians and Austro-Hungarians.

2019

I plan to expand my AWI Americans and Brits.
I may do a new WW2 German army. Otherwise just progressing my existing armies. Hardly gaming at all at the moment so no motivation to paint.

Try to keep up with all the beautiful 28mm miniatures Iron Duke, Empress, Footsore and Spectre( and others)  keep churning out.
Had a good year in 2018 with something like 490 figures ( including three cavalry regiments ) painted.

Must finish. 60-odd Belgian revolutionaries for our Salute game.  Nearly all conversions but well under way, so for once you won't smell the varnish during the game.

Would like to finish another brigade of mutineers (3 regiments) Will wait until those new variant mutineers get released.
Oudh regiment ( halfway already but on the back burner now thanks to the revolutionaries.
A big unit of badmashes and of course the 93rd Highlanders.
Four Indian elephants, some dhoolies and a  horse- drawn carriage
My Cruel Seas fleet ( yes, I've succumbed)
A single 1/48th scale twin engined plane. Probably going to need some help with this one.
My second Swedish regiment for the GNW- very slowly-
About two, perhaps three  dozen dark Ages figures ( Romano- British or Romano- Gaul,  Irish and Picts)
Small group ( thank God!) of modern special forces.

Panic, Chaos and Disorder. My job here is done

Not start any new projects
Finish some old projects
Not buy anything that doesn't relate to an existing project.
Play more games!

Well, I very nearly managed to clear out the unpainted lead drawer in 2018.
The final batch of bits and pieces (Salute freebies and other odd figures) is on the painting table now.
That means I can start a new project with a clear conscience in 2019!

2019 Hobby Goals

 - Finish all detail bits for Modular Dungeon tiles.

 - Finish all ZONA ALFA-related miniatures and terrain projects.

 - Paint and Play Infinity COLD FRONT starter.

 - Paint and Play Blackstone Fortress.

 - Polish and Release HARDWIRED game.

That's more than enough. If/when I accomplish those, I can add to the list.

Well my basic goal would be painting more for myself than in 2018, which shouldn't be hard. Everything I finished painting last year was commissioned by others  lol
But I would really like to:
- finish building at least 2000pt worth of Sylvaneth for Age of Sigmar (with some stormcast allies)
- paint what I built
- build some scenery for Age of Sigmar
- paint my Escher gang for Necromunda
- build scenery for Necromunda
- finish painting everything that is unfinished
- play more games

I could add a lot more to the list, but I think it's better if stick to these as actual goals and consider everything else I might do as a bonus  lol

Miniatures wise, continue to work through Star Wars Imperial Assault figures, as well as general SF.

I'm dabbling in a modern pulp project (Tomb Raider, Relic Hunter kind of thing) which has me retasking a lot of the zombie survivors I never got around to. It also has me painting up some vehicles, so should keep me busy for a while. Even better, I'm really enjoying it - it doesn't feel like the chore some of the Imperial Assault figures have become :D

Keep working on the digital and 3d printing side of things. I'm just about ready to print off Luke's Landspeeder on Shapeways (just got some walls to thicken up) and need to get back to printing and finishing the Rebels Troop Transport I modelled last year. I'm working on some furniture pieces just now, so plenty to do.

Work though some of the scenery pieces I have lying around to support the modern pulp setting.

Gaming wise, actually playing something this year would be nice ::)

My painting goal for 2018 was 100 28mm miniatures or equivalent. I eventually made it to 94. I was going to make it, but in the last month, several miniatures I had on order, which I needed for my new RPG campaign failed to turn up (they would have nicely pushed me over 100), and I ended up doing quite a bit of graphic designing for said campaign instead.

So even though I did not make my goal of 100 miniatures, I did a lot of other productive hobby work alongside painting, so I don't feel bad about it.

Also, even when looking at the bare numbers, I did pretty well compared to previous years:

2016:   54
2017:   75
2018:   96

So I'm certainly on the right track!

For 2019, I was going to set my goal at 100 miniatures again, but I decided to do things a bit different this time round.

I've mainly been painting units for several large armies, just starting on those units I fancied doing at the time. So I've got a bunch of projects running, and none of those is finished, but instead slowly but surely creeping towards being finalized.

It's been this way for years, and the upside is that I simply paint what I like, keeping the mojo going. But I never actually finish an entire army. Now, there will be a point in the future where I suddenly find myself finishing 3 or more large armies in one year, but I fear that's still a long way off.

Besides; I mainly play skirmish games of one sort or another, so large armies are not really required on the short term.

Therefore, my goal for 2019 will be to finish 3 playable factions (whatever game system they're for), plus the terrain to game with them. Now, a skirmish game usually requires between 5 and 20 miniatures, so this may look like a reducing of my goals, but the opposite is true actually.

See; as there are just a few per faction, those miniatures require extra attention; the best possible painting effort. And then there's the terrain too! For most, I don't have thematic terrain, so these sets will have to be built and painted from zero, which also takes a lot of time and effort. At any rate, it will be fun going the whole nine yards on single miniatures again; I haven't done that in years, and I really revel in doing small details...

Now to decide which project will be up first. My money is on my new RPG campaign, and then on my Dropfleet Commander Scourge fleet, which I already started last year. And then? Who knows? ;)
