BSC2019 voltans tree
« on: January 09, 2019, 10:20:52 PM »
So I thought I'd have a go, my entry won't be that exciting, it's going to be a wire twisted tree.

To start off I cut 20-ish strands of binding wire (the cheapest florists wire there was in the shop).

Then I bunch them up and fold them in half round my finger in this case.

after that it's twist it together to make the main trunk.

Split it into four separate groups and twisted them

each bunch is then split in two and twisted till each branch has two wires, then the end is folded over to create a loop which is then twisted to hold it in place, push the loop down in the middle and twist again to create more loops.

When the loops are small enough, you just cut them open to form the tips of the branches

I'm now at the stage of doing this many, many, many times, so it might be a bit before I take any more photos as it looks a mess at the moment.

So I've finally finished twisting wire and clipping the loops, now before I start arranging it I like to sort the roots so I know how the tree's going to stand when dome.

First is to split the loops at the bottom into 5 groups, two of which I cut and the others I twist then cut. After that it's just twisting like the branches but without separating them as much.

Next up is to shape the branches so it looks vaguely tree like.

After that I give the whole thing a coat of copydex to smooth out some of the surface and to seal the whoole thing, kinda.

And that's about it for wip photos as after this it's painting and gluing the foliage on. But it'll get a spray undercoat then painted and drybrushed. while I'll use burnt grass coarse turf for the green bits.

Cheers peeps, I figured as it's not the most amazing build I'd at least try and make it informative.
And I've just noticed some bits at the bottom that need reshaping, bugger.

Nice work.  I will go looking for some copydex to play with now as I have never seen it.

Copydex is easily available in the UK, no idea for the rest of the world, but it's a latex based glue that smells of fish for those that are interested.

Thanks.  I moved over here four years ago and had never heard of it.
