VSF Christmas AAR 2018 - A Christmas Tree Too Far
« on: January 17, 2019, 06:57:24 AM »
Over Christmas it was time for the yearly FUBAR VSF action! In this game I tried to pack as many steam powered machines onto the tabletop that I could! There was everything from Flyers to Automatons...

Late 1878 and in an effort to end the First Great Steam War before Christmas the British launched a surprise attack on the German Imperial Army.

A devious plan devised by Lord Butt-Plug and the S.O.E (Stealthy Overseas Executive) to break the Germans Morale. This involved capturing the three main German Depots filled with Christmas supplies all located in Holland at Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem.

The Eindhoven and Nijmegen depots were captured easily but trouble started with the advance on Arnhem, had the plan gone 'A Christmas Tree Too Far'?

Lord Butt-Plug and other officers from the Imperial Headquarters view their Landships and associated support troops advancing...

The action started well for the British but their left flank soon ran into trouble, the ruins that were thought to be abandoned turned out to be fortified and manned by elite troops! Also along the main road a traffic jam ensued as the Landship HMLS Terrific and a unit of Triambulators all tried to advance. This turned out to be crucial as the great Landship was never able to deploy all its fearsome firepower at any part of the game! Even though British Flyers entered the fray as this point so did several German Steam Powered Armoured Wagons. suddenly the odds tilted heavily against the British. For a turn the Redcoats on the left flank were being pounded and the German armour loomed menacingly as it deployed! Then the tables turned yet again! The Breakdown table intervened and two German vehicles were taken out of action with mechanical difficulties, the third was destroy by the Landship's big guns and Captain Snows Elite Balloonists arrived on the battlefield! The balloonists quickly dispatched the depots guards and were ready to occupy it. The plan was back on track well for a turn at least! The heavy casualties taken to get to this point had the British Army on the cusp of breaking enter the German Flyers and a Section of Teutonic Automatons! the robots flamethrowers and the twin Flyers Rapid Firing Rifles hammered the British infantry and the resulting losses were enough to break the British! The redcoats ran!

The British right with better activation rolls advanced much quicker than the left who's objective was the ruins. The road was quickly blocked with Steam Vehicles!

Bypassing the wrecks of three German Steam vehicle littering the hilltop Captain Snows 'boys' put paid to the Depot Guards and are faced with an empty Depot sentry box!

The German Dragonflys with their twin Rapid Fire Rifles were deadly against infantry in the open!
