WW2 German Cossacks AT guns?
« on: January 17, 2019, 04:40:13 PM »
I am busy painting a force of 28mm Cossacks in German service. I have read that a Cossack Reiter Regiment had a couple of platoons with AT guns. I wonder if that would be PAK36, 38 or 40 or maybe captured guns?

Grateful for any advice or comments!

It all depends on what kind of Cossack units you want to portray and for what period of time.
By the summer of 1943, in the 1st Cossack cavalry division (the future Cossack corps of Pannwitz) there were 5 anti-tank 50 mm cannons (probably German ones) in each regiment, and in addition there was a battery of 76.2 mm Russian field guns (as I understand it - short-barreled regimental guns). There were armed with tanks and assault guns.
The troops of the so-called Cossack Stan (mostly conducted anti-partisan actions in Russia and Yugoslavia), had the Soviet 45 mm anti-tank guns and 76.2 mm Soviet field guns. Also used two Soviet captured armored cars.

Thanks Cuprum!

They will be Kuban cossacks for the later part (post Stalingrad) of the war. What options for AT guns and armoured vehicles would you see then?

Then the photo and description of the artillery of the 1st Cossack Division is what you need.
Unfortunately, I have no information about the Cossack armored vehicles. But judging by the wording of the sources - were attached to it, the German units.
In general, this division had mostly standard German weapons and field uniforms (with Cossack symbols and partly using traditional headgear). Parade uniforms sometimes, especially among officers, had a Cossack sample.
