28mm German PAK 38 - options?
« on: January 20, 2019, 06:24:27 PM »
With the help of Cuprum I have figured out that my Cossacks in German service needs some PAK 38s

I have found:

Perry
Warlord
Rubicon

Are there other options? Grateful for any advice on which is the best alternative.

Many thanks!

Pretty sure Black Tree Design does a Pak38 too.

I would go for Rubicon, plastic kit.

Thanks Thargor,

BTD have some good models but I have too many disappointments from them to order again, unfortunately...

Thanks for the link! Do you know how this kit would compare in size with Warlord and Perry?

Rubicon kits are 1/56 scale.

Perry twins have stated that theit WWII range is aimed at being 1/56 scale.

Warlord vehicles claim to be 1/56 scale, but I am not gonig to promise anything for their artillery or especially infantry.

I guess a lot depends on what manufacturer your cossacks are from - and whether you need just the gun or also a crew.

I am using Crusader WW2 Cossacks and converted miniatures in similar size AND I need a crew!

Go Warlord - EW/MW
Rubicon crew will be too small
Perry crew will be smaller than Crusader and wrong uniform for a headswap
Do not touch the BTD guns (I like their German infantry) they are 1/48th and not great kits

To go with Crusader miniatures style, Warlord sounds like a logical choice. Crusader itself also makes some anti-tank guns, but unfortunately only the 37 and 75 mm versions.

Good advice!

Anyone seen the Warlord model in reality? The crew poses looks a bit dodgy on the pictures...

I owned the Warlord one. Kept the crew and binned the gun after spending ages trying to fit various lumps of metal together. Plan on going with the Rubicon gun with the Warlord crew as they'll fit the rest of my figures better.

I have two of the Warlord ones, and very happy with the gun. Though it took some googling to see where the sighting mechanism fitted.

My complaint is that guns are sold with (usually) 3 figures, and Chain of Command needs 5 + a Junior Leader, so effectively you need to buy multiple crews, and most companies don't sell them separately.
Wargaming since the dark ages...

It looked a good model, I don't know if mine was slightly miscast but I am rubbish at working with metal so lost my rag with it and chucked it. lol

Thanks for your comments!

Shahbahraz, would you mind sharing a photo of your finished model? It would be great to see a photo of one assembled

Ok,, it's here on my blog - https://aleadodyssey.blogspot.com/2019/01/warlord-pak-36.html

and here's one pic as a preview:

I am not keen on the lying crewman but the other two are cool. One thing is that unless you split the trails VERY wide, the gunner doesn't align with hand on trail and hand on control. Also watch out in assembly - add sighting mechanism, then add the shield to the gun, then mount the gun on the axle assembly BEFORE adding trails, or it will end up looking droopy.
