Author Topic: Turning Rangers of Shadow Deep into Lone Wolf Setting - Searching for Miniatures  (Read 7130 times)

I am thinking about new fantasy project inspired by Rangers of Shadow Deep and my recent return to some of my favourite children books - the Lone Wolf series. The plan is to change the setting: turn rangers of Alladore to Kai Lords and Sommerlund soldiers; the allies of Lorenthia to Durenor; the Shadow Deep to Darklands. I would like to follow the oldschool esthetics of briliant illustrations by Gary Chalk. I am more than happy with conversions but I need proper base for the project.

The rangers and soldiers could be easily covered by oldschool Bretonnians and GW LOTR minies from my collection. But I have issue with the basic evil soldiers and monsters.

The mighty Gourgaz?

This beast by GW is obviously OOP for very long time.

Perhaps Warhammer Kroxigors with some converting?

5th edition kroxie

7th edition kroxies

I would appreciate your ideas.

Proper Giaks?

I own full collection of metal orcs made in the early 2000s by the Perry brothers for the LOTR range by GW. Some of them seem very "giak" to me! Small size, big teeth, parts of metal and leather armour, mostly sabres and spears...

For example the plastic goblins by Northstar are too big for giaks. Any idea for alternatives?

Drakkarim

These heavilly armed warriors are the biggest problem. I have no idea for a solid representation.

Thanks!

I should have add the link for this modern Lone Wolf range. It includes some really nice figures but only one Drakkar and too few giaks for my needs. The gourgaz is missing completely.

I've managed to pick up a few of the original giaks at reasonable prices on eBay. The best match for them are Perry miniatures from two 1980s Citadel ranges: pre-slottabased night goblins (armoured ones rather than cloaky types) and LotR "Snagga goblins" (sic - no idea where the double G came from). Here are some of them (i.e. 1, 2, 3 and 5 in the front row):

I'd imagine you'd be able to pick up these on eBay fairly easily if you keep an eye out. They've got the same proportions and big heads as the Giaks and mix seamlessly with them. Miniatures from the slightly earlier Goblin Raiders boxed set come up regularly and cheaply on eBay too, and they'd work well.

Pre-slotta Citadel chaos warriors would be your best bet for the Drakkarim (I think those are what Joe Dever and Gary Chalk used themselves); they're to be had pretty cheaply on eBay; I never pay more than the price of a new contemporary miniature for them.

Hobgoblin, your knowledge of all things goblin and orc never ceases to amaze me  :)

Maybe the goblins from denizen miniatures fantasy range, they look quite giak-like, I've never seen any other than on their website though, so not sure of size.
Also it might be worth checking the goblins of the  fantasy warlord range from alternative armies, made to compliment the old Gary Chalk wargame, they do suffer from separate weapon syndrome though.

Rebel Minis have bought the old Mongoose Lone Wolf mini range.

All mixed in with their general fantasy range now:

Well, the creator of Rangers of Shadow Deep was/is a big Lone Wolf fan...

Thank you all for your comments and ideas.
  • I wasn't aware of the Mongoose range. Pity it doesn't fit to Gary Chalk's vision.
  • I own a sprue of the Warlord orcs. It includes useful bits for this project but the figures are human size 28 mm - i.e. too big for the giaks.
  • Hobgoblin: Interesting figures. The first one is particularly characterful!
  • The Denizen Miniatures goblins are quite giak-ish but I will probably stay with the Perry orcs just for the need of bows.

I have been starting to look into doing a nostalgic “Lone Wolf” project, I have found these http://www.miniaturefigurines.co.uk/Catalogue.aspx?ScaleID=14&CategoryID=70&SubCategoryID=327 and remember that someone is doing a line of Gary Chalk miniatures, but can’t for the life of me remember. Even considered converting some fireforge plastic mongols with some suitable goblin heads, but would like to get as close as possible to Gary Chalks artwork. Looking forward to any more links etc

For the Drakkirim how about the blood swordsmen by RAFM http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RAF&Product_Code=RAF04544&Category_Code=ROB

Alternatives for Giaks could be some of the old Harlequin LOTR range or Orcs, now sold by Scotia Grendel http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=221_222_46_203_204&zenid=fllbm0e3qvru3c8cncre2hg122
