Highland Gallowglass - Kitbash
« on: January 31, 2019, 07:00:40 PM »

Here is my first attempt at some proper conversions using GS and a mix of Perry Ansari, HYW and WoRs, plus the odd Essex and Warlord figure.

I wanted to make some Scottish mercenaries to represent the men Margaret was allowed by King James III to raise in 1460 and who marched south to and the north again after St Albans. One secondary source claims that they were present at Towton. But following discussions on LAF, it seems unlikely they were. Not sure what to do with them now, Flodden?

They are a mix of Highland heavy infantry and mixed missile troops, with the latter in skirmishing/advancing poses. In terms of sources, I drew on the plates and the images of highland gravestones in Osprey's MAA Scottish Renaissance Armies, and cribbed ideas from Stoke Field's excellent Irish troop conversions and Antediluvian's Scottish and Irish range. And later, the excellent references and debate started by Simon Chick on LAF.

Nice work. Can you point me to the thread on LAF about whether or not the Scots were at Towton.

Hi Shahbahraz

Thanks.

The  thread is here https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=112505.msg1407077#msg1407077.

I hope to do some more research on the subject when I find some time.

From what little I've read about them, the gallowglass did not really change for a few hundred years, so you've got a lot of flexibility about how/where you use them, from medieval to renaissance conflicts.
