I'm nearly done with my first four blokes, they are really nice. Definitely ordering more.

Just out of interest what would have been the make up of a standard marine section & platoon?

Great news. Payday on Monday. Also interested in the question posed by Ash. Although I intend to buy all of the figures as they are available so squad numbers here will depend. To a certain extent on Empress.

I think we did this before but for those at the back of the class and not paying attention paper strengths were

Platoon consists of a PHQ with an officer, platoon sergeant, RTO and a US Navy corpsman (medic).
Three squads, each of fourteen men, thirteen rifle armed, one with an M-79.

At Coy level there were six M-60s, six M-20 3.5”RLs as well as a mortar section of three 60mm mortars. The mortars usually stayed with the weapons platoon under the direction of the Coy Cmdr, the M-60s were almost invariably attached to the three rifle platoons, two to each platoon. The rocket launchers were also attached the rifle platoons, as and when required.

Pretty much based on what you had said before plus some other reading*, I drew up the attached:

*Must admit the Platoon ‘Guide’ seemed an oddity to me, not being familiar with the workings of the USMC. Is it one to drop ‘in combat’?

@Jasper, looks like a Thompson with a stick magazine and a M60.

@Silent Invader - would the squads be broken down into fireteams?

According to the book they were. The Marines have been remarkably unchanged in terms of squad structure since the 1940s. Three fire teams. When they were M-14 armed one member of each team was provided with the modified M-14E1/ M-14A1 with the bipod and select fire capability to provide a base of fire for the team. The adoption of the M-16 made the distinction somewhat academic.

Like all such things, whether they actually operated as fire teams depended on squad numbers and tactical circumstance.

I found this page a not long ago while trying to talk myself out of starting a Hue collection:http://grunt-redux.atspace.eu/us_marines_forces1.htm

It matches Silent Invaders very helpful chart, right down to mentioning that 2 M60s were often attached to a rifle squad.

Are there plans for corpsman, mortar and rocket launcher packs?

Hi all, the empress m60's Come with an ammo belt. At one point it starts with a cylinder form.

I have not seen it in photo's. What is it for?

I wondered about that too. Apparently these are field modifications to ensure proper feeding and reduce stoppages.

You can see them in a lot of pictures of the period. They are cans fixed to the MG, as mrcleh has said, to reduce stoppages.

A great touch from Empress/Paul Hicks. I was thinking about to make them, if they were not included with the miniatures.
