Bonus points to anyone who can identify the Osprey books in the background.

One of them on the left looks like the Osprey Elite on the International Brigades 1936-39?  lol

A few photos of US advisors next to Vietnamese personnel. I'm sure I've read a number of accounts about the height difference in various books, so it appears to have been noticeable.

I think as long as you keep weapons and equipment in the same size as the Marines. It will be fine. Otherwise the Vietcong will just look like 25mm minis.

I used to visit factories in Vietnam at least twice a year between 2001 and 2016.
Vietnamese men are noticeably smaller than Europeans and Americans, even now.

I’ll go for smaller Vietnamese too… search for pictures of south vietnamese troops with Garand… their rifles are as big as they are… lol
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

Another vote for smaller. There is a substantial amount of period and contemporary evidence to show the Vietnamese are generally smaller in stature than westerners.

One of the reasons the US decided, at a relatively early stage, to arm the South Vietnamese with the M-16 and why many Vietnamese preferred the M-1 and M-2 carbine.

Improved living standards and diet have increased the height (and weight) of the average Vietnamese since the war both within Vietnam and in the diaspora. That said, my wife has Vietnamese friends, we have both visited Vietnam and even at only 5’10” I’m still notably taller than most Vietnamese I’ve encountered. I did the Cu Chi Tunnel tour when I was there and one thing was obvious about those tunnels was that they were definitely designed around smaller folk.

Of course, toy soldiers are just avatars, nobody expects them to be actual representations of the range of human variation. If they were, then Paul would be a very, very, busy sculptor. I reckon about a half a head average difference to the Yanks and  Australians would be a good compromise for the Vietnamese. The South Vietnamese will probably look even smaller once you slap a tin hat on their bonces, so a moderate difference won’t hurt. Too small and people will be saying they escaped from the Perry WW2 range. :)

To my mind a noticeable difference in height is essential for the right look. That said, it doesn’t need to be in proportion to the scale difference, just enough to provide the visual effect.
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2024 = 0
(2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

Apparently, the new plastic Perry Mid War Americans are much bigger and match up quite well with Artizan, Bolt Action etc.

Carlos makes an entertaining point, but the Perry figures are taller than you think.

Hmm, haven’t seen the new Yanks but I do know that the Perry 8th Army figures, both metal and plastic were titchy next to my Eureka Australians, which aren’t exactly huge. Did make them perfect to use as police in Borneo or HK though.

The Perry GIs aren’t any bigger and fit as good or not in with other ranges.
