Dux Bellorum: Warriors vs Shieldwall
« on: February 07, 2019, 02:26:31 PM »
Hi Guys,
after playing several Dux Bellorum games and having enjoied every single battle my group and I are starting to ask ourselves if Shieldwall and Warriors profiles are really balanced.
It seems like thoughness of Shieldwall is not balanced by Warriors traits.
Have you ever experienced such a feeling? Do you think Shieldwall are too strong?
I will be happy to hear your comments.
Marco

Funnily enough, I thought you were going to ask the opposite. I find I always want my shield walls to have a higher cohesion value. They tend to get chewed through by warriors. That said, we are always very aggressive and tend to use LPs to add attacks rather than block hits.

I will add my agreement though that games are always enjoyable!

It's a great game, but I agree that Shieldwall has the drop on warriors whwn you have LPs available.

We found the best solution is to limit LPs when cancelling hits, no more than one per combat.

Cheers

I have also seen someone suggest that an LP = a 50% chance of a casualty being saved.

Thanks  a lot everybody for your comments.
Actually we are quite conservatives and use most LP's for cancelling hits.
However we find the game really enjoyable and made up our minds not to amend the rules but look for new tactics for making warriors more effective:-)
Cheers.

I believe CW's suggestion is actually one of the optional rules in the book isn't it?

You are absolutely right!
I understand  it should be applied to both Warriors and Shieldwall while CW's suggestion was aimed to Shieldwall only

In my limited experience it's very difficult for Warriors to crack Shieldwall who play defensively. You need to exploit terrain and Uncontrolled Charges as much as possible. Even then games tend to degenerate into a slogging match. If there are other tactics to be exploited, I'd be very interested to learn about them.
