Guards Camel Regiment, 1885
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:16:53 AM »
Currently I'm working on something new entirely - figures for the Grenadier Guards of the Guard Camel Regiment from 1885!

...with an utterly unfitting backdrop. :D But my photo table is currently made up like that and this is just a WIP shot.

28mm Perry miniatures. Until I started working on these I knew NOTHING about the Mahdist Uprising. Now I know a tiny little bit, and quite a bit about Grenadier Guards of the Guard Camel Regiment's uniforms. :D 8 camel-mounted dudes (the flag bearer preferred to stay back on the painting desk), and 4 more camels at the rest. In the future I'll also add a bunch of dismounted dudes.

Hope you like them so far!

Superb  8)

With that backdrop there’s no reason you couldn’t use them as Imperial Guard  :D
cheers

Yes, great looking paint jobs.  And do I see MAV (modeler added value)?  It looks like you added the halter ropes, yes - no?  If yes, very nice job and like the officer's variation.

@Poiter50: Thanks very much! :)

@Totleben: Well, I'm not sure that's true 100% of times, but they sure make for a great variation. However, if people complain about painting horses from now on I'll discreetly point them towards bloody camels. :D

@RichBliss: Thanks, very kind of you.

@DintheDin: Yeah, I'm considering toning down the red a little. But then maybe I won't. :D

@FifteensAway: Thanks, Sir. You give me a bit too much credit there I'm afraid. I just painted the reins on the models to look like ropes, because I've seen those being used in reference photos (including the officer variant being striped like that). In fact I think these are supposed to be ropes, as there's a big old knot sculpted underneath the camels' heads. Very pleased with the look tough, and I'm glad I put the extra time in instead of just painting them as reins in a nondescript dark brown colour. Somehow rough-spun ropes fit camelry better too. Makes them look proper different to horse-mounted troops and underlines the generally rougher, less elegant, more wobbly impression camel-mounted warfare has to me. :)

@Eric the Shed: Thanks very much, Sir!

Okay, it's time to finish those by adding rank insignia and all of that.

I'm aware of each of the guys wearing the Batallion number and Regimental name on their right sleeve, in the case of this 1st Bt. of the Grenadier Guards it's the

.1.
GG

in a dark red. ["." used for spacing ;-) ]

For the officer (the guy leaning on one arm to turn to the side) I saw a variant showing the Bt./Rgt. letters plus a single red, v-shaped bar (I'm sure that there's a much more proper name for that in uniformology, but I forgot the term. :D It's "Balken" in German.)

For the NCO (the guy raising his right hand), I got a note from the gentleman I'm painting these for which tells me to paint three golden/ochre bars outlined by red on his right arm. Which sounds a bit much for an NCO given that the officer got a single bar in red?

Also - what about the ensign? Does he get anything beyond the "1 GG"?

Can anyone of you help me out with this? Thanks in advance!

If I may come back to those ropes for a moment - are they loosely connected except at the chin knot?  I ask because I studied the photo closely before my previous post and part of why I thought they were added was they were almost all in a different position.  Or are there that many variants of the sculpts with the ropes so positioned?!
