The Apparatus-like Mechanism of Kwalish-ish
« on: February 13, 2019, 02:24:44 AM »
Blender's version 2.80 beta is getting a lot more mature, so I decided to familiarise myself with its new stuff with a design project. My AD&D/OSRIC players have a non-trademarked underwater lobster mechanism which they're getting a lot of use out of, so that's what I picked to build.

Here's what I have so far, as of this morning.

This afternoon has mostly been spent making the pilot's chair. Next up with be the control panel.

And here's the view (so far) from behind.

The body is actually fully enclosed, with access only via a moon-pool in the rear chamber. There are two separate, removable panels to allow access to the interior, in the event that this thing ever makes it on to the 3d printer.

It is yet to get its legs, tail and nippers, but they'll be along eventually.

Right, I've got the outer shell of the tail pretty much done, though I'd like to do something a bit more interesting with the flippers. At the moment they're a bit flat and boring... maybe a few ribs or something. Just how to go about that I'm not yet quite sure.

Underneath those plates I want to put a bunch of clockwork-looking stuff, cogs and push-rods and the like.

I am fascinated to see how that prints. I imagine it will be in several separate components?

It would have to be. I'm vaguely keeping printability in the back of my mind, but I'm mainly just building and hoping I can deal with it later.

Looks like a cool project. Regarding the tail, why not model it after a real like crawfish tail like this one:

It's kind of segmented and vaguely hairy, which would be a good addition to this model, IMHO.

Can't wait to see you start printing the components.

I added a bit of panel detail to the tail fins to make them a bit less bland and featureless.

And beneath the tail section.... CLOCKWORK! (Don't look too closely, it would never actually work in a million years).

I've now done the pilot's control panel. The levers and stuff are all pretty chunky, as I've built them with a view to FDM printing. They'll look quite a bit more delicate in physical form.

Here it is, seen from the passenger compartment.
