Best value UK source of teddy bear fur?
« on: February 14, 2019, 03:36:23 PM »
Hello all,

I am starting a new project and wondered if anyone had a preferred UK supplier of teddy bear fur. The exact tone doesn't matter too much, since it's getting painted up - but it's for a 15mm project and I'll need either at least 4x4 (preferably 7x5) for the table.

If anyone has any suggestions for the best value table-fur, please let me know!

Please and thank you,
Ahistorian

If there's a fabric shop near you, they may have an off-cuts bin where they flog off scrap of material cheap. Whenever MrsCub goes shopping for material I try to tag along to root through.

And also to find some affordable chiffon to make my belly dancer costume.

Sadly I've tried the local fabric place. Before I shell out £40-50 at the chain store near me, I hoped there might be a cheaper option lurking in the LAF hive mind.

If there is a Boyes store near you, try there, as I've picked up several decent off cuts for only a few pounds.

Hobbycraft used to sell it, which is where I purchased mine some years ago.

lol thank you Paul some of use have the ability to visualize ,and  I've just had my tea. (How do I tell my Mrs ,A welsh belly dancer has put me right off me pudding)

I'd recommend taking a slightly different tack. Look for teddy bear throws for furniture / beds and bedding sets. I've picked a couple of 1m×1.5m for £7 each. (One in olive drab still to be painted and one white used as is for winter boards )
Especially if your after a fur texture for 15mm . As the finer short fibred furs/fleeces look more in scale.Pre made throws tend to be 180cm × 150cm & 240cm x 180 cm . with the added advantage of being hemmed so its not going to frey at the edges once you start reworking the texture.
Dunelm, B&M, Home bargains, The Range. And Ebay.

Mark.

I can see how that would be traumatic:

Dunelm and Range are both good candidates. If bought as a fabric on a roll, you will probably come across 5’ wide and then get charged by the metre or part there-of.

There is a store called Abakhan that often has roll ends and remnants:

The roll ends in store are generally very reasonably priced

This is actually something I was considering; I just wasn't sure if the core fabric would be weaker than the fake "skin" holding teddy bear fur together. I currently use fleece throws for my regular gaming mats - they take acrylic sprays really well. This one is for a special project though, and I want to get the groundwork just right

Hi

I got my stuff from eBay.

Search for "faux fur fabric" rather than teddy bear fur. It comes in different pile lengths which can usually be specified. I think I paid around £10 for near enough 6x4. Good luck.

I've bought several times from http://www.craft-fabrics.co.uk/ and been happy.

http://www.craft-fabrics.co.uk/Qual_W160P.htm is probably the stuff -- it's 5ft wide and effectively about 3quid a foot for length including shipping so the 7x5 table would be 20 pounds.

I'm experimenting with different colours: brown airbrushed green for forest, oatmeal airbrushed green for crops and so on.

Might be a bit long for 15mm, but that's what clippers are for...

I am a strong advocate of hunting teddy bears for their fur. Kill them all!
