Meanwhile in 1st C. BC Kilikia
« on: February 21, 2019, 12:50:00 PM »
To paraphrase, there are few things in life as pleasant as messing about with boats. Here are my first attempts at Xyston 1/600 ancient galleys. I've done these up to try out a little something new I'm working on, but they are still eminently suitable for Galleys & Galleons.

A pair of hemioliai (I've since tried to add eyes);

A trihemiolia;

A trireme;

A quardeme;

And a couple of merchant vessels.

Great work on the models. I have a few ships from Xyston in the Greek / Phonecian era that I plan to eventually do up.  They have a pretty decent selection of warships that cover a few eras for classical and Hellenistic vessels.

I did one of the battle ships up with sails, but trireme didn't really use them in combat , so I like how you've done yours.  The masts in Xyston are really, really weak - so I ended up using tooth picks instead, haha.

Thanks. And yes, the sails look good on trireme Tec, but weren't there  during battle, so I left mine off. Also, I hate painting sails - it takes me forever to get anything half decent.

I agree about the Xyston masts. The merchant ship with full sails has mad the last replaced by thin copper piping.

Some clever 'trick photography'!

All my ancient warships are mastless too. My Latin and Greek master told us they beached the masts before battle. One of the benefits of a Classical education...

Mark Antony's fleet were discouraged at the battle of Actium BECAUSE they
kept their sails on board, even though he tried to bluff them by saying,
it was to enable a faster pursuit of Octavian's (defeated) fleet.

Nice models/painting by the way.

Ahh yes, my mad photography skills. You'd never guess the photos weren't real!  :D

Thanks gents for all the positive comments! We got them out on the table and messed around with some neat concepts last weekend. Still very much a work in progress, but I always find it easier to mess about with painted minis.
