Rebels and Patriots AAR - Hardtack Hill (ACW)
« on: February 28, 2019, 11:08:14 PM »
An AAR of our first Rebels and Patriots game: http://ilivewithcats.blogspot.com/2019/02/hardtack-hill-rebels-and-patriots-aar.html

I find the rules to be delightful. I wrote a review of them here: http://ilivewithcats.blogspot.com/2019/01/a-patriotic-rebel-i-review-of-ospreys.html

I'm working hard on my own minis for ACW (Sash and Saber) and also have a lot in the works for AWI (Perry and Foundry). These rules have been worth the wait and have facilitated my return to ACW and AWI gaming.

Nice battle report and a good review of the rules, they look interesting, may have to purchase those myself! :)

Great report! I agree with your take on the rules. In a recent thread, someone complained that large units weren't such a big deal, given they roll 12 dices regardless size, and that their "only" advantage was that they were more resilient. As you well explain, resiliance may be a battle winner. I also like how you and your opponent managed to combine a solid line of infantry, with skirmishers.

Thanks for sharing!

I have a copy of R&P but won't be able to play any time soon. When a unit fails to activate, can it do anything at all besides stand pat? There are "free" moves in The Men Who Would be Kings.

RAP doesn't have the free activations that TMWWBK does. If a unit fails its activation, it just stays put. However, you can proceed with other activations, unlike LR, DR, and TPL where a fail ends your turn.

Right. But a unit that fails to activate doesn't shoot, for example.

Correct. It does nothing for that turn.

Right. But a unit that fails to activate doesn't shoot, for example.

Just to clarify, even in TMWWBK, a unit must either use its free action or test to do a different one. E.g. It can't test to move, fail that, then use its free action to fire.  The term 'free action' means it can do that action without needing to test (i.e. you are always guaranteed to be able to do that action). This gives every unit one thing they can always do (unless they are pinned and need to rally, of course.) Each unit can only ever do one action per activation.

Great AAR and rules review. The 3-2-1 basing looks fantastic.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

The ACW has never really fired me up so I am thinking of using R&P for either (or both) The War of the Triple Alliance (1864-70) or The War of the Pacific (1979-83).

I'm using it as an excuse to finally buy some of the excellent Warlord French and Indian War line.
