Looking for 28mm "lanky" Savages/Cavepeople
« on: March 06, 2019, 11:38:34 AM »
    Hi all,

for a project I'm focusing on this year, I am looking to add a handful of savages with a bit of "Cavepeople" flair.

Unfortunately, I haven't found figures that met my preferences so far:

    • 28mm, preferably comparable to Foundry, but smaller ones wouldn't be an issue (see below).
    • Preferably figures of "lanky physique", that is, not the more stocky variant. Therefore, the Copplestone figures are more or less out, as are the forthcoming North Star plastics.
    • Preferably not too "fuzzy/hairy", that is, less beard and animal skins instead of proper furs, so that they don't look too out-of-place for a svelte, "tropical" environment.
    • Not too elaborately-attired, I'd prefer a proper primitive appearance.

My ideal choice would be figures that resembled the savage Kali cultists from "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad". I don't have a pic to hand, but I'll upload a screenshot tonight, for those who don't know the film (shame! ;)). For this, I've also checked a variety of Plains Indians ranges (including the Copplestone South American Indians), but no luck so far.

My fallback option right now would be the Pulp Figures South Sea Melanesians. Those are very close to what I am imagining, and fine per se, but a bit on the stocky side and not too good a match, I think, with the other figures for the project (Antediluvian and similar). If nothing else comes up, though, I'll take those and make them work and probably be happy with them (they're Pulp Figures, after all).

I'm sure there are ranges out there I don't have the slightest knowledge of, so if anybody knows of a range that would match the above, I'd be grateful for any pointers.

Hasslefree have a lot of naked/"skyclad" miniatures and dollies in their fantasy resin masters range. They are of slender proportions and usually not too big. Perhaps you could use a little greenstuff for hair and whatever your savages need to cover their nudity.

For my "Lost World" cave-types I have some ESAIR TROGS from Baueda.

Mine, still in bags, look better than the painted ones on the website.   ::)  They are much slimmer than my Copplestone cave people. Although marketed as Fantasy figures, they fit I think with early humanoids.

A screenshot or 2 would be usefull.
There may be ranges close enough that you can do some conversions. ;)

Thanks all to the answers so far, and the Denisovans are extremely close already.

That said, I am not too fixed on any historical ranges, but fantasy savages or "primitive" barbarians might be okay, too, provided they are not too tall.

I'm sorry I forgot to add the screenshot yesterday, long day made longer after I came home and then forgot about it.

May be some Dark Africa warrior from Foundry (for the loincloth and haircut).

Those are the ones, precisely. Looking for a more or less tropical theme, so the less furs, the better.

I've already got a number of the Azande (painted up for Darkest Africa), so I would prefer something a bit less recognizable; additionally, they fall on the bulky side of the spectrum, as outlined above.

The Eureka Tupi are rather good, too, but less of a match to what I had imagined and a bit too uniform with the haircut and those fronds.

Or check the Black Tree Designs ancient germans or some of the berserker vikings.
The only problem is the hair and beards.
