Latest build: 28mm Mediterranean House
« on: March 19, 2019, 04:57:15 AM »
Some pics of my latest complete build.

This is a southern European building based on the Knights of Dice Tabula Rasa “Desert Compound 2”.  It will be pressed into service in various settings and genres: WW2 Italy, Napoleonic adventures in the Peninsular, and at a stretch Pirate and Black Ops games set in the Caribbean or Central America.

The KoD Tabula Rasa (i.e. “Blank Slate”) range offer basic shells from which to customise or modify as necessary. I have no connection with the KoD, just a satisfied customer.

For this build I added the following:

  • textured rooftop on the flat-roofed section using coffee stirrers
  • windows and doors from Warbases
  • wall-capping stone and stone wall elements from the scrap box (card and MDF ‘sprue’)
  • a scratchbuilt pitched roof using MDF and plastic roof tile texture from a supplier found on eBay
  • wall texture built up with a thin layer of sparkle/polyfilla
  • the ivy creeper is punched out from green card using a Greenstuff World micro leaf punch

All the roofs can be removed to access the interior.

Was a fun project, hope you enjoy.

That is looking ace! 8)

This line exemplifies exactly how I see MDF buildings ought to be; as a blank canvas, to be tarted up by us hobbyists.

The way you've done this, completely hides the fact that there is an MDF shell underneath, whilst other companies try and offer every detail of a building with MDF. And even though that's perfectly acceptable as a gaming piece, and certainly sturdy, it always shows.

MDF is not a miracle medium, and handrails, windows, signs and other finer detail will look clumsy and bulky when done in MDF. As if our miniatures are walking around in Lego City.

But your building craftily avoids all that, so hats of to you, good sir...

Please keep 'em coming! :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

A good example, to the rest of us, of what you can do with an MDF 'shell'.

Nicely done.
The basic shell idea is very useful, it’s usually all I’m looking for in MDF.
