Decent Rules For Star Wars (ground battles)
« on: March 21, 2019, 12:21:56 PM »
I've recently picked up Star Wars Legion, but a quick glance at the rules were enough to put me off. The models however are lovely and I'll be buying a lot more.
Can anyone recommend a set of rules that are easy to learn, can cope with a large amount of models as well as smaller amounts (the 'lists' in Legion for armies seem very limited), quick to play, not getting bogged down with rules/special rules, and still give a flavour of Star Wars?
I'm aware of Fubar, and I've tried shockforce before. I've a few rulesets for sci-fi already - 40K and Antares for example, but I don't like them. Tbf to Antares, having bought the rulebook, I realised I didn't like the fluff nor the models enough to get into it, and 40k is 40k.

At the moment, when I decide to yank out the SW minis, I go with Galactic Heroes.  While designed for small sized games (5-10 minis), you can certainly make it as big as you want within reason.  Because of that, I don't mess with any other rules for my SW fix.  Good luck finding what you want, you'll get a WIDE variety of answers here.

I would recommend you Galactic Heroes if you want something easy to learn, and scale-able. It's very enjoyable, in fact, the author played a scenario with Star Wars miniatures.

Can't really help you here, except maybe recommend the Infinity Rules, which can be adapted almost 1 on 1, when it comes to Star Wars. in fact, before Legion, I was planning to do exactly that, and I even believe there is already a port out there.

But the  actual reason I post here is; if you are just using the Legion miniatures and not the gaming aids, I'm interested in those.

See; I actually really like the rules, but have so many WotC miniatures, I'd rather play with those instead of basically replacing my entire collection (repainted) with exactly the same stuff (in a slightly different scale, and unpainted). It looks like in that respect, I'm your polar opposite; don't want the minis, just the game! lol

So; if you want to get rid of those cards, tokens and other stuffs, please let me know...  :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Go with the classic - West End Games Star Wars Miniatures Battles:

OOP but easily found for sale, might even be a pdf around somewhere.

Alternately, if you want more skirmish-level gaming, the Goalsystem Blasters & Bulkheads is very good:

Another vote Galactic Heroes.

Here's the stats I use for my Stormtroopers.

Galactic Heroes for me, but then, I kinda biased. I'll bring a few copies to Salute.

Simple d20 system - Jedi hit on 1+, stormtroopers on 20+  ;)

Another vote for Galactic Heroes. It makes for a good game for Star Wars characters. If you want rubbish shooting stormtroopers just make them d8 for firing!

Another vote for Galactic Heroes.
As well as the (good idea) of D8s for the Storm Troopers,
you could multi-base them (say 3 or 4 to a base) then class
each 'base' as a figure. If you use sabot bases you could even take a
figure off for each 'wound'.

And another vote for Galactic Heroes.   While written for small units of about five figures, larger actions can be played by having each group of figures activated by one card instead activating individual figures.

cheers all, I'll look up Galactic Heroes then. I have the original SWMB rules, I just found they seemed a bit clunky. BaronVonJ - if you bring any to Salute, I'll either be on the Frothers table or working on the Hasslefree stand.

I'll be running a Fistful of Lead Tales of Horror game at the Oshiro Model Terrain table. I'll see if I can stop by.
