Great work on those Pathans! They can play on my table anytime! I like the use of muted blue. I will have more blue tunics and turbans in my future forces.

Well done! You’ve got a nice mix of manufacturers there.
I look forward to seeing them based and your next batch of figs.

Thanks very much chaps, I do think that the blue was a signiture Afridi colour. The muted colours I think are much more in keeping than the whites I used to use, I think a lot of the photos coming out of the region are "Sunday best" (or should it be Friday?) or taken at Jirgas rather than the drab working/fighting everyday clothes. The basing department is home this evening so these will wing their way off for basing in York shortly, if anyone is interested I can make a list of the paint colours and manufatcuers netx time I do some of these chaps.

Roger,
I for one would like a listing of your paint colors. Thanks.

The books I've read about the NWF suggest that the Afridis wore a mixture of pale blues and whites in their clothing. Other tribes were characterised by other combinations (I think the Bunerwals wore dark almost black clothing, but I'd need to check that) but eye-witness accounts speak of a lot of white (which I guess would be off-white in reality) in Pathan dress across all the tribes. Probably undyed cloth, as it would blend in reasonably well with the arid terrain...

OK next lot of these I will be sure to include all the colour schemes used in the write up on the blog.

In terms of the use of white the later photographs I ahve for the frontier have a broader colour scheme than the 1880'S stuff so I am happy using the mix of ivorys, pale washed out blues, greys, browns and khakis you see in this picture.

As always with painting miniatures for me its about what looks and feels right to me so a bit of artistic licence is always thrown in.
