Cork Bark for Rocky Scenery - Thoughts?
« on: April 13, 2019, 12:16:57 AM »
I'm working on some terrain pieces for my mountain man project and I was looking to model some rocky terrain. Usually I use bark nuggets for my rocks but was looking to do a couple of larger pieces. My thought was to get a medium to large piece of cork bark to use as the main outcrop, then build around it a bit with either smaller sliver pieces, or bark nuggets.

Any ideas or words of wisdom when it comes to buying or working with cork bark? I've seen many sellers on eBay (mostly in the UK) and some pet stores sell cork bark for reptile cages, though these seem more stylized and less "rocky outcrop" like.

Thanks in advance.

Don’t be afraid to sit there for ages ‘matching’ pieces together. It’ll be worth it in the long run  :)
cheers

This YouTube video was super helpful for ideas. There's a few similar ones, but this one is by far the better one.

Large sheets of cork.  Orchid supply house.  Know a bit about orchids and don't reveal your true plans!  Well, here in finally sunny California this works.  No idea about your neck of the forest.

This! Also have a saw handy (I used a hacksaw) to cut pieces across at whatever angle that will make them look right so they sit flush with the ground.

Maybe I'll tell 'em it's for my iguana. ;)

I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but I try and have some suitable images of what I'm trying to achieve on hand. It's amazing what difference a slight re orientation of a single piece can make.
Good luck with it mate.

I just bought some of the 12x12" cork boards from one of the home supply stores, they come in packs.  I have built several army display boards, tall ones, using "pulled' cork.

NOT pulled PORK!

If you have the patience, and it sounds like you do, they turn out very well for rocky formations, hills, mountains, unit and army bases, etc.

Go for it!  Put up some pictures when you get done!
