Oh these are lovely - I like the reds. Question on the swords - are they red in the background? What's the reason/practicality of this?

Oh these are lovely - I like the reds. Question on the swords - are they red in the background? What's the reason/practicality of this?

The weapons and armour is typically made of chlen hide which, per the setting background, can be hardened by the tanner clans to be almost as hard as steel (but not quite - steel is superior.) It is lighter than metal weapons and armour and is typically enameled in colours appropriate to the user. The great empires all use national colours and so that is used for armour, however there are other colour associations which also play a part. Red is used by Vimuhla, God of Fire for example, and also by the War God Karakan.

So in this case, blue is used on the armour to show that they are Tsolyani but then a lot of red is used to show their affiliation with the Lord of Red Devastation.

Mu'ugalavyani units typically wear shades of red as that is Mu'ugalavya's national colour. This is the empire to the west of Tsolyanu. To the north is Yan Kor, who wear green, and to the south-east is Salarvya, who wear black.

There are exceptions. Sarku troops often favour brown or grey, their master being called "the Lord of Worms" (and having a strong affiliation with death and the undead.)

I think the Legion of the Lord of Red Devastation could have taken the Army of the Dead easily. I mean, they fought their way up through the Golden Tower of Avanthar against the False Emperor Dichiune's undead hordes, didn't they?!  8)

Who needs an army?  Just give the Winter King a time out with your Excellent Ruby Eye and watch the enemy horde fall apart.  But yeah, if you want to show off, bring the Legion, complete with their magical support corps.  The Temple of Vimuhla pretty much specializes in reducing armies to ash.

Also, didn't these guys have a Lightning Bringer assigned to them?  Laser cannons just aren't even fair.  :)

Not sure how useful a Lightning Bringer would be in Avanthar. For one, I wouldn't be surprised if the palace had defenses from the same era (i.e. "Shields" or some such) and anyway, that might be useful for sweeping the ramparts and courtyards, but IIRC they fought their way up, floor by floor. Mind you, their Kerdu at the time, Karin Missum ("Red Death"), was a complete nutter so with him giving the orders they might be expected to perform well.  :D

They are done by my company, The Tekumel Project , producing 28mm miniatures for MAR Barker's Tekumel setting. You may remember it as one of the first role-playing games: The Empire of the Petal Throne.
