Comparisons of 28mm Gangster Lines Please
« on: April 16, 2019, 09:07:19 AM »
I am now looking at diving into 28mm prohibition era gangsters, and found a 2006 thread showing pulp, copplestone, dixon and brigade minis. Have there been any significant new ranges since then other than great escape and blue moon ?

Would anyone have some comparison pics including those ranges or comments, it would be most appreciated :)

I have opted for Models of Yesteryear rather than Ledo, so also any recommendations for passengers (since that 2006 thread) would be great, I have seen the comment that Dixons passengers may fit.

Thanks all...

Sloppy Jalopy have a few figures, including passengers, that suit the Models of Yesteryear cars, which are larger than Lledo. And I don't think there have been any significant new ranges, other than Great Escape and Blue Moon, since the 2006 thread.

Well I actually have a 25-28mm new range that I am about to start marketing - the range is called 'We Only Kill Each Other' and are based on the  gangsters of 1920s - 1930s NY.   The figures are all cast, ready to ship and I should have the store ready in a week and will be offering discounts to supporters in the first 60 days of opening.

My figures are larger than the Brigade line of gangsters , about the same size as the Murch Pulp Figures gangsters.  The are all in scale as well - as the same sculpter sculpted them all.

Here are a lot of photos for you to view in a couple albums:

Check out Footsore and Empress for Irish Civil War and VBCW:

There are also interwar figures hidden here and there:

I guess also quite a few western minis could work with some minor adjustments of heads and weapon hands

Great suggestions ! I am thinking more "last man standing"/"lawless" type terrain/scenarios rather than big city. My homework shows me 20s/30s rural towns were probably not that different from "old west", so gives me more options for buildings as well as double use for them, as well as minis.

Sounds interesting! I have ”sleeping project” myself planned for a rural setting with hillbillies, KKK and lawmen. The Netflix movie ”Lawless” was a great inspiration  ;)

London Calling - No my sculptor did not sculpt the Bob Murch castings - to the best of my knowledge - Bob Murch did.  The figures in my line are approximately the same size as those of Bob Murchs Gangland Justice line.

Although I am in the US my sculptor is from the UK and he is a member of this Forum - Alan MaGuire.  Does nice work and he is a good man.

All the best,

Frank

If you want a straight western setting, there is the Bruce Willis remake of a Fistful of Dollars:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Man_Standing_(1996_film)
set in prohibition era Texas.

If you get the DVD box set of the Untouchables (Robert Stack 1950s black & white) there are a few episodes set in small towns, including one in Mexico centred around a small hacienda
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

For Vehicles, Lledo can be cheaper than Matchbox, but the scales vary tremendously on both.

Yup I was thinking "Last Man Standing", helped by a healthy dose of "the Highwayman" last week followed by Live by Night (Amazon Prime - everyone's in this) !!

I stocked up on Matchbox whilst on the Isle of Wight last year, stumbled across the mother of all diecast shops, picked up a stack for about £3 each. BTW there was also a couple stalls in Covent Garden Market yesterday (in London) knocking out Ledos for £3 each. Up close they definitely looked that bit smaller than the Matchbox, as mentioned on many threads on here, but still very nicely detailed models.

Terrain wise I have a number of the Chicago Way buildings from 4ground, survivors shack from Sarissa and a couple of the harbor houses from TT. The 4ground stuff is a bit of a slog but pretty, the Sarissa item in comparison is simple, still needs a lot of tarting up and at 15 quid probably not very good vfm in comparison. I haven't built the TT ones yet.

Frank - thank you. Noted.

I did a large 28mm diorama-style gallery (151 pictures) entitled Gangsters and Stuff which focuses on a city layout, a harbor and several other scenes.  It is accompanied by a long write-up discussing the figures, vehicles, buildings and other terrain pieces I used.  You can see it at my gallery website.  It is located in the center row of galleries, five galleries down and identified by the name Gangsters and Stuff at www.warin15mm.com
