1st Afghan War scenario. Balochistan 1839
« on: April 20, 2019, 03:56:14 PM »
Medium sized scenario (40-50 figures per side) using the T&T Colonial supplement rules.
Basic form is an outnumbered force has to hold out or escape while waiting for reinforcements.

Fortescue and the Buttercups.
Kalat province Balochistan.  September 1839

Background/Briefings:

British Player
Captain St John Fortescue, 16th Light Dragoons, a notable amateur botanist, having learned of the presence of the rare Onagraceae Oenothera Gigantea Pallida (Giant White Buttercup) is visiting an ancient Chandkha ruin to find examples for his collection. Fortescue is accompanied on the excursion by his friends Captain Aloysius Crispen-Smythe of the 2nd 'Queens' Regiment and Subedar Kanhai Singh of the 16th Bengal Infantry Regiment.
The 5 man party is completed by Fortescue's batman and Singh's bhishti.

Guard for the party is provided by a section of troops indirectly under Crispen-Smythe's command. For no reason other than to impress his friends Smythe has foolishly ordered the inclusion of a Regimental Standard and a Drummer in the small force.
Fortunately (but probably not for Smythe's career), the CinC has learned of the excursion and ordered a larger, more capable force led by you to join Crispen-Smythe and Fortescue and escort them safely back to the British cantonment.

Pashtun Player:
Spies in the main British/EIC camp have informed you (the local Pashtun warlord) of the departure and destination of a small group of British officers with a weak escort and you sense an excellent opportunity to raid and capture the isolated party for ransom.
You can muster your own band of Sindhi warriors, a small band of Ghazni Mercenaries who escaped the attack on the city and have been living on your land, plus 2 further warrior bands from friendly local Pathan villages.

Forces:

British:
1 Hero (Random ability)
1 Unit Regular Infantry Veteran (14  inc Standard and Musician, + Leader,)
1 Unit Regular Infantry Trained (12 + Leader)
1 Unit Regular Infantry Trained (12)
1 Unit off duty officers/Sightseers (5)

Regular Infantry equipped with Musket and Bayonet.
Hero, Leaders and Sightseers equipped with Sword and Pistol.
Traits: Formation Melee, Volley Fire, Formation

Pashtun:
1 Hero (Tactician plus 1 random ability)
1 Unit Sindhi Pathan Tribesmen Trained (16 )
1 Unit Allied Pathan Tribesmen Raw (16 +Leader)
1 Unit Allied Pathan Tribesmen Raw (16 +Leader)
1 Unit Ghazi Tribesmen Raw (12 + Leader)

Pathan Tribesmen (Sindhi and Allied units) equipped with Musket, Sword and Shield
Ghazi Tribesmen equipped with Sword and Shield
Traits: Advanced deployment, Nimble, Expert Marksmen, Hidden Foe

Deployment:
Game table is 60”x60” with the river assumed along the table edges as per map.  If a longer table is available the river can be placed as scenery with mountainous terrain beyond. The river is impassable.

Sightseers begin dispersed (at least 8” apart) through the Camp and the Ancient Ruins on the riverbank. Veteran Infantry unit begins split in 2 units of 6 (at least 8” apart) one in the Camp the other in the ruins. Infantry Leader, Standard and Musician with the Camp.
Other British units and Hero begin off table, entering at edge 'A' on the map.
Time of entry determined by dice roll at the end of each turn after the first shots are fired. On first such roll units will enter on a score of 6, next turn a 5 or 6, or automatically on the 3rd turn.

Pashtun Hero, Sindhi Pathan, Ghazi and one allied Pathan units begin on table at points B (all points must be used). Other Allied unit enters at any point B. Time of entry determined by dice roll at the end of each turn after the first shots are fired. On first such roll units will enter on a score of 6, next turn a 5 or 6, 3rd turn a score of 4,5, or 6, or automatically on the 4th turn.

Each side is aware of the existence and likely entry points of the others reinforcements.

Objectives/Victory Conditions:

Game objective is for the 5 sightseers and the Regimental standard of the Queens regiment to exit the table via point A.
If this is achieved AND the British player suffers less casualties than the Pashtun, or manages to incapacitate the Pashtun hero, the British win a major victory.

If either Fortescue or Crispen-Smythe are 'killed' (captured) or the Regimental standard is captured AND the Pashtun suffer less casualties than the British the Pashtun win a major victory.

Any other outcome is a draw.

Obviously the characters and regiments can be changed to suit, (my last playtest of the scenario replaced Crispen-Smythe with the little remembered Captain Hamish McAddle of the 79th Cameron Highlanders as I had a newly painted Highland unit that needed some table time).
Unit sizes can also be reduced in ratio.

Only point to note is that this is a Musket era scenario, so if changing to a later date, 2nd Afghan War for example, bear in mind the marked increase in British firepower.

A few pictures from when we played the scenario are in the colonial board:

Thanks, I am working on a follow up "Rescue" scenario to continue Fortescue's adventures.
