I use them all the time.  For modern city settings, I have a 3'x3' street mat I pieced together from two vinyl/rubber 2'x2' Mars Attacks mats from Mantic (the A and B note the positions of plot points in the scenario):

I also have a couple of nice cobblestone street mats for quainter settings, one from Micro Art Studio and one from Front Line Games.  FLG makes many different mats in various sizes, and ships world wide.

How did you piece them together to get 3x3?  I've got 4 of these mats that i piece together to make 4x4 but i prefer 3x3

Mantic makes two styles of these mats, one with a T intersection and one with just a straight section of road.  I cut one of the straight road mats in half, and used it to extend two sides of the T mat.  The streets line up pretty well, though there is a slight color difference you can see in the photo.  That still left a 12" square area in one corner uncovered...I enlarged this area to 12"x15," filled it with a piece of model railroad turf taped to the underside of the mat, and used it for the lawn of the church.  In other setups, it is a city park, a cemetery, etc.

Agreed.
I bought 2 of those during the last clearance from Mantic for 5€ each (2x junctions) they are great and very versatile. I mainly use them for Walking Dead.
Unfortunately they don't seems to be available anymore even at the standard price.

A little wider at 4', but the Cigar Box mats hang over the edge of a table fine, or fold under, it's a fleece material that doesn't wrinkle.  Can also be cut easily.
