Home Guard vehicle painting, Help!
« on: April 27, 2019, 10:18:27 AM »
Morning all, I have a converted armoured car from Foundry, the Austin 7 from 1st corps on its way and the Armadillo from Warlord. I want to keep the HG vehicles from looking to Military and was looking for suggestions of greens to use preferably using Vallejo model colours and would anyone know if the Home Guard had any camouflage schemes.
Many thanks in advance
JB

The Home Guard would try to mimic their army counterparts.  That said, during the invasion scare private civilian vehicles were "camouflaged" with whatever paints were avilable and suited the local area.  So really any locally available camouflage colours could be used either straight from the pot or mixed.

This one appears one colour probably a light brown or a mix of green & brown to produce a pale camouflage colour.  Mixing talcum powder into gloss paint produced a matt effect and paint would be thinned to make it go further!

Base colour (khaki?) plus a lighter colour (mud?) splashed on top

Two colour - probably khaki with black or green on top

Base colour plus a poorly thinned camouflage colour so brown or green base with thinned black (to grey) or dark green thinned so base colour shines through.

Not camouflaged

Here's a couple of Austins in period colour schemes . These two are pretty indicative of early war schemes. Which were still quite common in the home guard.
There is a slight draw back with trying to replicate the DIY paint schemes. If you don't use highlight the colours and use shading.Opting instead for flat base colours will just leave you, with a model that looks like its been painted by a five year old.

Nice selection of photographs.
That last one looks like a bit like Citadel Caliban Green (available in spray).

Empress Carden Loyd base sprayed Citadel Caliban Green (aka Frock Womble Green).

Plus two more that I couldn't fit in one post.
Also I had to pop out to my workshop to check which colour I use. lol
I used GW/citadel Castellam green for these. Also just to show how the same colour can look completely different in different light.
Which is helpful when looking for an exact colour match. Because you've  leave to go with a best guess from the paints you own. As it can varry some much with just lighting let alone factoring in weathering.
Added a few more I you've probably guessed its a subject I've been looking into myself.

Wow! Didn't realise the Home Guard were that well equipped with the various conversions and armour plating or aware of the use of camouflage to that extent. So I thank you both, Gentlemen, very much indeed for your input and again to you Mark for sharing your research.

Gentlemen, once again many thanks to you all for your input. I know Sealion is what if but it's good to get the factual bits right.
Cheers
