Hel?
« on: April 27, 2019, 02:36:08 PM »
This seems like the right place, but I'm not sure having read the Prof's guide. Happy for it to be moved if that is what is required.

Anyway, I'm looking to get back into gaming after some health issues and fancied trying something new. Something light and fun, and what's more light and fun than the end of the world? I have recently become very interested in Germanic/Norse mythology and have also picked up the rules set "Of Gods and Mortals." I'm not really all that keen on the idea of the denizens of different mythologies fighting each other the way they do in the rule book, so I thought I'd go with a Ragnarok style deal where different factions of the same mythology duke it out, with the goodish gods taking on the badish ones (I love how the Norse Gods are never really wholly one thing or the other).

So we can accommodate four players I thought we'd have that many forces. Thor and Odin on one side (or Thunor and Woden if you want to get all Saxon about it) and Loki and Hel on the other (a sort of bring-your-daughter-to-Ragnarok day at the workplace - ahh, sweet). So I need a Hel figure. I am aware of the Bad Squiddo one, and it is a nice figure, but for me it has some problems too. I'm not at all keen on her dragging her brother and some dead guy along. I wish it didn't have the serpent and the corpse, it would be perfect without them. It's just all too cluttered and wonky looking for a gaming piece, I feel. I will probably get it anyway if I can't find anything else and at the moment I can't. That's where you guys come in.

So the TLDR is: Are there any other Norse Goddess Hel figures out there? A half alive/half dead figure would be ideal, but any kind of powerful-looking dark sorceress would do, I guess. It also needs to tower over 28mm figures the way the North Star OGAM god figures do, so you can tell it is a god.

Ta.

Sorry for the verbosity over a simple question. I really can't help myself sometimes.

Bronze Age Miniatures has a "Norse Gods" range found here:

Unfortunately, no Hel, but the Frigga figure might be a base for converting if nothing else comes around.

There are also some very large statuettes of Norse Gods floating around, but those may be a bit too tall (11") and maybe a bit too cheesecake:

GW’s Slaneesh Keeper of Secrets might be an option (or a little OTT?)

Somebody didn't read my post.  ;)

Can't say I blame you, I did ramble on some.  :)

Thanks, guys. Don't think I've quite got there yet, though I do like the look of the Blood Rage one. I'll have to look into that in the future as it doesn't seem to be out yet unless I have totally failed at Google. It isn't in the pack that contains Odin, Thor and Loki. I reckon I could easily get into the Blood Rage game but it would be costly. I'll probably try to find the Hel figure on eBay once it starts appearing. I got a Blood Rage frost giant that way.

Sorry,
I often only skim read things - bad habit.  Also a little sleep deprived.  I am sure I have seen another Hel somewhere only recently.

Was she around in the ancient world?

Welcome to OGAM - it's a great fun game.

I spent some time looking for a suitable Hel a while ago before the BadSquiddo one came out.

With no real luck. Ral Partha do a couple of godesses that might be the basis of what you're after
http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/ral-partha-fantasy-c-37/heroes-and-horrors-c-37_38/01007-goddess-of-evil-p-1205.html
(There's a "love" version too). I've not seen them in the metal though.

The Norse Gods pack from SHQ has a Sif figure in it which isn't really at all evil looking but is at least a large scale female Viking.
If you're doing Odin, Thor and Loki you should buy that pack anyway. All three at big 40mm kind of size for £8.

Me, I'm going to get the Hel figure, (plus sorceress on moose!) from BadSquiddo at Partizan :).

As I said, happy to have this one moved if folks think it is poorly placed. This does seem to be the board where the OGAM threads mostly live, mind. And though none of it was written down until medieval times by those Icelandic fellas, Germanic pagan culture dates back much further than that. It came to Britain towards the end of the Roman period. But anyway...

Forty quid for a Heroclix figure? I should cocoa! :)

TWD, I do like that one. Can't seem to find one for sale at the moment, though. I'll have to keep looking.

Past replies from moderators have confirmed that as the board is entitled "Myths, Gods and..." this is the correct board for OGAM (rather than the Fantasy board)
