15mm Assyrian Wars: Assyria
« on: May 01, 2019, 11:15:51 AM »
Because old projects never die, once again I dust off a handful of old soldiers in an attempt to forge an army worthy of Ashur and expect that this time it will be different.

Well, in a sense it is. A repeatedly abandoned DBA army is being given new life for Triumph!

Other than creating a usable army for this system I don't have a firm plan for it's composition. I think it's going to end up being more a force pool of options and in this list, there are a lot of options.

Chariots
4-horse chariots with four crewmen
(Essex Miniatures)

An old chariot from an old Babylonian army that I've very reluctantly pulled apart because it overhangs it's base by more than I can bear today.

So, the draught-pole has been shortened and the horses rear end positioned right up against the front of the cab. Much damage, much repairing and it still overhangs, but it looks a bit more acceptable.

It's then been painted over to lift it closer to my current standard and a new Assyrian crew added.

Spear
Spearmen with long or conical shields
(Essex Miniatures)

I have twice as many of these as I need, two of the conical shield elements are from a past attempt so I added a third to reach the max allowed for the army list. I find I prefer the long shields though, so I added them just because. :)

Archers
Bowmen
(Museum Miniatures)

Nice figures, but may at some stage switch them for something a bit closer to the other Essex foot in appearance. Plenty of choices for Bowmen in an Assyrian army such as Egyptians, Kushites and Elamites.

Light Foot
Battle array armed with spear and round flat shield
(Essex Miniatures)

First two are also from a previous effort, I've just painted over the top to tart them up a bit and rebased them to match the current style.

Skirmishers
Supporting skirmishing bowmen of the battle array
(Essex Miniatures)

Dressed for success! Tried to make them look a little more affluent than their Tribal cousins, or at least cleaner.

Skirmishers
Tribal levy skirmishing bowmen
(Essex Miniatures)

Some more old boys given a going over, particularly because I seem to have gone a little heavy with the varnish the first time around and there were some whitish patches that needed to be camouflaged. Also rebased to match.

There are more of these than I need for this army, I plan to use them a bit generically where I can get away with it for other armies of the time.

I have old DBA Babylonian, Elamite, Saitic Egyptian and Kushite Egyptian armies all needing to be refurbished and expanded. So there should be a little scope for a bit of double duty for some of these guys.

Nice stuff.

I always wanted an Assyrian Army.  If I get around to it, I hope it will look as nice as yours!

In my youth I have played against Assyrian armies, they look impressive, Essex did an excellent sculpting work on these.
And your painting is top notch! Your brush picked up every little detail! Congrats!
It would be great to see them in a group shot! Cheers!

This is a lovely looking force, great painting. I really like Essex's sculpts when a good painter gets hold of them.

A long time between posts but some newish troops have mustered for inspection.

First a replacement for the Museum miniatures bowmen to better blend the sculpting styles of the army.

Archers
Bowmen

Now some additions to bring them up to strength.

Horse Bow
Scout horse archers

An extra skirmisher.

Skirmishers
Tribal levy skirmishing bowmen or slingers

Lastly a temporary abode for the Great King.
