pixelgeek's Fantasy Project
« on: May 04, 2019, 01:25:41 AM »
I don't want to say that we are in a 'Golden Age' of fantasy rules but we certainly are spoiled for choice. I have, like a lot of people, a sizeable cache of fantasy miniatures that have been waiting for the light of day and a paint brush. So with the release of Warlords of Erehwon I decided to dust off some of those miniatures and get them ready for some games.

Part of the appeal with these new rulesets is that it is easy to build a single force and then modify the unit sizes to fit the rules. Dragon Rampant units resize nicely for WoE and Age of Magic. So its not much of a chore to build units for one system, in this case DR, and then use them in the other systems when the mood hits.

Since there are many people in the same situation as I am, namely lots of minis being unused, I thought that I would publicize my efforts with the intent to inspire other people to either dust off their old armies and play some games or use some of those old minis to build a new force and get gaming with it.

You can follow all of the posts about the Project on my blog

and I will also be posting here as well as work continues.

So the first unit done for the Project are some Dwarf Riflemen. These are some GEM/CP Models figures that I picked up years and years ago and finally got around to painting. My Dwarf army will be a mix of these, some GW plastics for the heavy armoured warriors and perhaps some Mantic figures.

These are some great-looking exotic little fellas! Nice cohesive look to the unit.

Cor, what a treat for the eyes.

I have to ask - the bases, are they pre-made or have you used a crack-effect paint?

The bases use the GW texture paint. In this case it is Agrelllan Earth.

They were a lot of fun to paint. Fairly quick to do and still a nice level of detail

They are really quite charming. Nice ‘old school’ look without the fear of lead rot :-) I may need to pick up some more of these if I want to do another unit

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out next time I'm in Firestorm.

It needs to be applied in a thin coat. The more of the paint you add the more of the chemical agent there is present in the paint and the more intensive the crackle effect will be. A thick coat will almost totally lift off of a base.

While waiting for some bases to show up I wrote some articles about adapting a WFB army for use in the rulesets that I am using for the project. The first one, dealing with Age of Magic, is up

That is really odd. And yet I totally see it

So resurrecting this old thread.

I just took some photos of the entire dwarven force I built and painted.

Thanks. I was quite pleased, and surprised, by how well the battle for Skull Pass dwarves turned out.
