Dayak War Prahu
« on: May 05, 2019, 02:08:39 AM »
I am moving back into my miniature Borneo and working on getting my Dayak headhunters some proper transportation. I found this great interpretation of an 1840 picture of a Dayak War Prahu on the internet and am going to use it as inspiration for my two canoes.

I have been lucky enough to acquire two Scheltrum Dayak war canoes from eBay over the years.

They are nice models but lack the prow swivel gun and the rear decorative motifs. I put a request out on LAF for some swivel guns and my buddy Svennn came through with flying colors. Thanks Svennn!! Here are the prahu with the swivels guns.

I am currently working on the stern decoration. I started by cutting a pattern out of card, then cut 4 additional pieces that will be glued together,

Now I have turned to the streamers that will be attached/sandwiched between the two cut card motifs. I approached these streamers the same way that I do pandanus trees (for those that have seen that build). I cut strands of florist wire and sandwich them between masking tape.

Next will come the trimming and gluing. Comments and critiques are especially welcome now as I am early enough in the projects to modify design and output.

Poiter50 here is a Dayak longhouse that I scratch built about 10 years ago. I plan on doing more Dayak stuff including a log boom to block the local river.

Nice, Lon. Are you planning on any particular period or opponents?

Poiter 50,
Yes, there is one turn of the 20th century Steamship Captain that will be bedeviled by both Dayak and Malaysia pirates as he goes about his rounds. I plan on running a pen and paper campaign in conjunction with both Pulp Alley and role-playing games set around the South China Sea and Dutch East Indies.

Well I've lead an evil life, so they say, but I'll outrun the Devil on judgement day.

Some progress. I have trimmed most of the streamers and have started initial assembly on one of the aft decorative crests.

I have finally (mostly) finished the aft decorations for my Dayak canoes. Here is a (probably too) detailed history of that build. Here are the streamers being attached between the two motif sandwiches.

Here are the interim aft motifs that need to be finalized and attached.

Boring for the moment but soon to be glued on and painted. Things will change if I can avoid too much of the blue ruin.

This is really cool - I should include Dayaks in my rather all-encompassing marshes project.
You also have a good excuse to Include Sandokan and Rajah Brooke!

This seems to be the only Museum model of a Dyak vessel I can find, though there are a surprising number of Maori, Alaskan, Solomon Isls. and Polynesian examples about... :?

Thanks Sukhe,
There are a couple of pictures out there of Dayak two masted deeper water vessels that look to be related to dhows.  They are on my wish list but I will have to find time to build them. Now on to the completed and installed aft decorations.

Tomorrow after the glue has well set I will undercoat. I feel like I am finally making progress.
