Oh Look shiny -Valleyboy's folly - a start in ECW
« on: May 05, 2019, 07:38:04 AM »
Just put up a blog post having made a start in 28mm ECW
I just couldn't resist those Empress Miniatures figures
https://valleyboyinnz.wordpress.com/

When I think of all that I have on the go and weigh it up seriously it really is a daft move, I've painted 2 foot units in 6 weeks and will have to do both sides

Very nicely done.
I’ve painted quite a few of these Empress ECW myself, and they do come out crisp and clear.

A couple  of lovely looking units there. The Empress figures certainly have a different, early war feel to them.  I suspect you may be down a rabbit hole now that you will never escape from  :D

Very nice work, Kerry.
They look great, although I bought a few a couple of years ago and I couldn’t get on with them, so sold them on. I found the detail too shallow for painting comfort, and there’s something about them that always reminds me of ECW re-enactors rather than actual people of the period. All a bit too neat and tidy if you know what I mean.
Also they are exceptionally tall and willowy compared to most other ECW ranges (or any wargames figures for that matter) and have a most distinctive look which makes them difficult to mix in.
Having said all of which, yours do look very nice indeed  :)
Maybe if I was starting again... (as it is, I have around 250 Bicorne and Renegade ECW painted, so, probably won’t be starting again lol)

Actually it is the exact opposite,  they are decidedly unlike re-enactors and incredibly close to the few pictures we have from the 1640’s. Personally I find them a joy to paint and far more pleasing to the eye than some of the other chunkier, poorly researched  ranges out there ... but then I am a bit biased 😉

Thanks Gents for the positive vibes
I think Empress really come into their won when you look at the cavalry Richard, the horses are stunning and look he part
As I haven't painted any other ECW figures I have nothing to compare with
I think I have enough figures for about 6 regiments of foot of the same size and give their cost will probably add some other manufactures eventually
The cavalry are expensive but well worth it I think and their unit deals are pretty good cost wise

Empress is the only range I know of which includes genuine dragoon horses. Most ranges mount dragoons on ordinary cavalry horses. I also particularly like their mounted dragoons - in casual poses but still with plenty of variety.

I quite like their wagons, carts and drovers. Besides, they are the only ones I know of who make a team of oxen with limber (just ordered two sets :D).

Great to see the Empress-Figures. Great painting, but Captain Blood is right (...detail too shallow for painting comfort...). I painted several units and after half a unit of P&S I need a break and paint something completly different.

But..... I thought they were for a friend Kerry?  :)

Very nice job on them. I went with the Bicorne ones because I like the heftier look, but my project stalled.  You'll be more disciplined than me.

Thanks but that's something I have little of, now wandering and getting distracted I have in abundance
