Conestoga Wagon
« on: June 28, 2019, 01:57:58 PM »

Hi,
I searched he archives but I didn't find anything so I'll try writing here  ;)

I have a couples of 4Ground General Purpose Horse Wagon (and 3 more to assemble plus an idea to order some of the new Sarisa ones).

As a next step in order to improve them I would like to have suggestions on how to cover the Conestoga. The easiest  way I know is to use paper and diluted glue but I never tried it.
Anything else?

Thank you
Davide

Another option would be to try using a thin sheet of styrene plastic.  Cut a paper template to fit, then cut the plastic.  Heat very very lightly over a candle to soften it just enough to bend to shape and press into place.

I haven't used this technique for wagon covers, but I have made medieval pavilions and ships' sails this way.  If the plastic heats too much and curls up at the edges, you'll need to try again with another piece!

I'd go with the tissue and glue - it is very strong once dry.  I have a wagon I did probably thirty years ago still in good shape.  Just practice a bit first before the 'big' job.

Lead foil or even tin foil is my ‘go to’ for canvas truck covers. The heavy weight lead type can be obtained by cutting up the tubes of the more expensive creams and ointments wives typically slather on themselves. Thinner gauge but useful stuff can be gleaned from yoghurt pots, baking trays etc. It will superglue to anything to care, wood, plastic etc.
