I just ordered another pack of SLRs, going to try and chop out the 'butt packs' and see if I can make some kidney pouches for an SADF look...

Cracking work again Ash, ordering the rest of my platoon tonight. I might try your method of photography with a black background.

Absolutely gorgeous work Ash! They've gone straight to the inspiration folder for my own ANZACs.

Just for future planning, it would have been extremely rare to see M16s and Owens in the same unit. The Owens were replaced by the F1 during the mid-60s, and then the F1 was replaced by the M16. The F1 remained in theatre until the end of the war, but was most commonly used by vehicle and armour crew where the SLR or M16 were too unwieldy.

Cheers Splod, much appreciated.

Re the use of the Owen gun:
From what I've read the Owen was still very much in use by the RAR in '66. Apparently a very reliable weapon in harsh conditions, as highly resistant to stoppages.
I don't know if there was much of a mix of automatic weapons within an infantry section, there probably was some cross over; the early M-16s (AR) seems to have had a reputation for stoppages and snagging, so would have made sense to have at least one other reliable automatic within a section.
I think it should be approx 6 x SLR, 1 x M60 & three M16 (scouts & section commander), however there were still Owen guns in use so I have one in each section (the casualty figure in pack 6 also has an Owen; probably based on this picture).

The film about the battle of 'Long Tan' based on Bob Grandin's book 'Danger Close' shows a few in use, that's the look I was going for.
Anyway, there are some very well sculpted models with them, so my little blokes have them, as they look pretty..! :)

Cheers Rick, look forward to seeing those.

There was a mix in 1965 and ‘66. Photos of 6 RAR at Long Tan show both Owens and M16s and there’s a fairly famous one of the late Cpl Buddy Lee with an Owen around the time of Long Tan.

There was even a mix of weapons earlier in the piece. Photos of 1RAR in 1965 show M16s in use. These were transferred across to 5 and I believe 6RAR when they arrived. It wasn’t as if the Australian Army was entirely new to the M16 anyway, battalions deployed to Borneo during Confrontation borrowed AR-15s from British Army stocks.

The Owen was held by 5 RAR up until October of 1966, according to the reminiscences of one of their former armourers. It was a reliable weapon and still with a degree of merit. One of the crew commanders from 1APC Squadron at Long Tan was awarded a DCM for cooly dispatching an enemy RCL crew with one after the .50 cal jammed. It got mixed reports for the penetration of its ammunition. This I can believe, as was alleged that a wet blanket at fifty yards was proof against its successor, the F1. I’ve fired the F1 on multiple occasions and despite being a good shot I would have been lucky to hit a man sized target at 50 metres.

The reality seems to be that what killed off the Owen was ageing ammo stocks. All the 9mm ammo on hand dated to the mid to late 1940s and ended up being condemned and instructions issued that weapons were not to be test fired with ammo pre-dating 1954.

The early issue M16s were indeed without chromed barrels and bolt assists but they gave less trouble to the Australians probably because the Australian Army is big on soldiers actually cleaning their weapons and without recourse to a fucking comic book to encourage them to do so.
