Speak to me of 15 mm Pulp Gaming!
« on: May 17, 2019, 01:58:19 AM »
I know of Blue Moon, Rebel Minis, Highlander Studios, Irregular, and Khurasan.  Expand my knowledge.  And recommending larger scales is cheating.  Yes, some lovely figures in larger scales - but that ain't the question.  There are quite lovely figures in 15 mm (and 18 mm), too.  I have Sherlock Holmes - one of the best of all sculpts in all scales.  Also a couple different Indiana Jones types.  And many more.

Oh, and if you do like 15 mm and need trucks, check out Blue Moon's World War I range - they have some recent additions that look quite good.  Could even use for prohibition games!  If someone will just do some appropriate cars... >:(

So, you knowledgeable few, enlighten me (and other interested parties who stumble this way).   :D

FifteensAway, I have always seen the great beauty of 15s in terms of the opportunity they offer to deal with large armies... forces on a grand scale.  That said I have also attempted to add small details to my 15mm collections.  From my perspective Pulp is far more about the details and the individuals rather than groups or armies.  As you well know I elected to divide my attention between military/historical in 15mm and Pulp/Adventure/Victorian in 28mm.  That is not a pitch for you to follow my example.  I included that comment to provide some context for others who don't know me as well as you do.  If I had decided to do my Pulp/Adventure/Victorian collections in 15mm, that would not have changed my belief in the importance of detail to those collections.  Consequently, had I gone with 15mm for my Pulp, I would have relied heavily on HO for terrain and detail.  I would have, as I often do with my military/historical, enriched my 15mm Pulp collections with figures from Prieser.  Prieser figures offer the kind of unique poses and looks that are more common with 28s and seldom available with 15mm/18mm figures.  I have used those figures with 15mm/18mm collections many time and think they only serve to enhance the look of those collections.  By the way, there are a lot of cars, trucks, wagons, and carriages in HO that will serve.

Just between two 15mm guys, while I am deep in my 28mm mountain men collection (Foundry dominated)  at the moment, I have allowed myself to jump into putting together/gathering/accumulating another 15mm/18mm collection (a fools journey for a guy my age).  This is a WWI late war British vs German trench warfare project.  I am already adding Prieser to those figures because they offer detail options that the 15mm/18mm just don't.  I hope to add a lot of detail to this collection, and I'm sure I will be relying heavily on HO for that detail.

I Check out Peter Pig, A few sets can be used German Shore Party and Armed French Resistance for Merchant Sailors. there is a few others.

Brigade Games USA (not Brigade Model, UK) has 2 sets of Pulp Figures in 15mm.

Irregular Has a couple in there Tusk Range.

Eureka Miniatures I had just received WWII pack of a Armed Sailors 5 with rifles, 2 with Thompson SMG and 2 Officers. Plus a British Office in of the Sinai set of the WWI range he can be a professor or an old Colonel

My plan is to set up a few different groups in the 1930ssuch as Americans, Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Occult Groups and Gangsters racing against each other around the world gathering Mystical Objects, Occult Objects and most likely anything else along those lines
Just remember "If the Enemy is in range, so are YOU!

There aren't that many dedicated Pulp ranges, but there are a lot of suitable figures in other ranges.
This thread over on The Wargames Website lists a lot of the suitable ranges https://www.thewargameswebsite.com/forums/topic/pulp-in-15mm/

To start wit, there's a lot on the Peter Pig site, scattered between the WWI, SCW, WWII and AK47 ranges, depending upon the flavour of Pulp that you're seeking.

Minairons has a big 15mm SCW line, which could easily provide plenty of supplemental pulp characters & fodder.

I take it that you are looking at the 1920's-1930's Pulp era.   I do it in 15mm but also include Conan and Lovercraft Cthulhu in the mix. One scenario set in the late '20's I'll happily do with "Conan". I also have a lot of Flash Gordon and Mongo.
I'm looking at doing some WWI games based on G-8 and his Battle Aces vs the Steel Mask or the Purple Menace. There were a lot of WWI Aces pulp serials.

Are you looking at Secret Cults as your foes? Or Nazis, the Yellow Peril (Dr Fu Man Chu, The Mysterious Wu Fang, Weng Chiang, The Hooded Claw?) The Dragon Emperor? Deep Ones?
Are your guys going to be with the French Foreign Legion?
Mummies?

CP mummies are a bit larger and bulkier than Rebel Minis.
Ral Parthas are very good size.

I have the Rebel Minis figures and a lot of figures from Eureka WWII range ( US Sailors, Philippine infantry, Russian Partisans, Greeks officers and Gendarmes as 3rd World police/law enforcement.)

Cultists I use Essex 15mm praying monks from their Medieval range.

There are the Tupi Indians from Eureka miniatures. For adventures in the Amazon or Borneo

and from Grumpy
http://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=329_330_338&sort=3a

There are LOTS of Arab figures from nearly every ancient, medieval and colonial range. Lancashire games old Ansar are an excellent size mix with Rebel Minis.

Chinese figures you need to pick through various Boxer rebellion ranges. Blue Moon Chinese are really tall compared to the Rebel Minis Americans but Irregular are a good match for Rebel Minis.

Splintered Light do a few good Witch Doctors and Cannibals.

Would you have dinosaurs?

Ral Partha has excellent  snakes.

and Donnington has a snake charmer

They also have an "Ark of the Covenant"  of sorts.

Large Apes.?
Papo has a great Silverback

Minifigs and Tin Soldier UK have a lot of officer types in their colonial ranges. The Tin Soldier range has infantry in pith helmet which is excellent for French Foreign Legion in French Indo China. Paint them white or Khaki. Sadly they don't have a pic of them, but I'll try to take one of mine.

And the Zvezda WWII Russian Zil-3 truck is virtually a Ford.

Very cheap and available nearly everywhere.

Keep the information coming, please.  And Deflatermouse, that is quite a listing and nicely annotated with links.  How about the aircraft - where did you source those?

Oh, my goal is a bit of a hybrid pulp/VSF/quasi-historical mix - what I call my Slightly Cracked Colonials, as in I've cracked open history to allow some (a lot?) creative license.  More likely to go the way of prehistoric than dinosaurs as in saber tooth tigers maybe, t-rex unlikely.  But more focused around 1890 to 1920 or so but, again, with creative license (aircraft and vehicles).  Definitely a lot of Mysterious Island Jules Verne influence - even though much earlier time period (more ACW era).

My primary setting is likely to be east Africa but may bounce over into China (I have a HUGE Boxer Rebellion set up underway) with side trips into India (large Indian Mutiny collection).  For east Africa, I also have underway quite a collection of beasts, over 150 already painted and will touch 990 when done (all purchased).  More 15 mm African animals welcome, especially various types of gazelles and antelopes if anyone knows of any!!!!!!!!!  Specifically looking for one more gorilla (though not Kong sized - I have one of those already).

You might also consider Stone Mountain's 15mm Colonial ranges, both British and French.  Also, some of the 15mm ACW(especially some of the accessories) might work for American adventurers in the back of beyond, lost world, etc.

PS: FifteenAway, did you get the missing items yet?

Yes, I got the missing items - PM'ed you and posted on other thread to that effect.

Have plenty of Stone Mountain Colonials, both British and French as well as the ACW accessories.  The ACW camp packs are especially useful - mine is being used for my Old West fort.

I already have a number of figures from Highlander Studios - and very nice they are, too.  I have both "Tarzan and Jane" sets and the Kelly Gang sculpts, might be adding the two adventure sets.  Heck, I even have the figures Brigade made in 15 mm - sadly deciding it wasn't worth expanding.  Clearly wrong on it being worthwhile - witness the various others who stepped into the gap, some quite considerably.

But always looking for more.

Sounding about for rules, too.  Pulp Alley is interesting but it looks like you could spend $200 US and still not have everything.  That is worrisome and substantially off-putting.  Maybe Astounding Tales or the rules from Bob Murch might work better for me.  I don't mind spending money but I also think over priced rules are a bit suspicious.  And, of course, I know they are almost the official rules for this board.  But only almost.  I have a few of the Gaslight rules but they don't quite fit the bill for me.

A couple of rules that I know of are ".45 Adventure" from Rattrap Productions and "Larger than Life" from Rebel Minis or Two Hour Game they are working together, I don't know anything directly about the rules but like any rule you use there are going to be PROs and CONs

One of the first sets I picked up was Triumph and Tragedy. Most intended for Back of Beyond, RCW and the Pulp era.

  https://ospreypublishing.com/blog/triumph-and-tragedy--pulp-era-wargaming/

"So what is it that makes these rules different from its competitors? Two things. The first is that it takes an almost role-playing approach. Although players may field 20 to 30 figures a side, the game is dominated by a few heroic individuals. These characters are allowed to roll for special skills (and may end up with drawbacks as well). Some people may find this cinematic approach unappealing, others will probably find it right up their alley. It is purely a matter of taste."

I haven't been able to play them, but they seemed to be a similar vein to Pulp Alley but IIRC were out before them.
Very straight forward slim set.
Although I'm not sure how they would go with Conan, Solomon Kane,  but you should be able to do the USMC attack on Innsmouth or the Mountains of Madness.
