I am currently working on a board for my Near Future game at TST in September, here are two preview pictures:

I plan to do six segments, two roads (as seen), two industrial yard boards, and two beach boards.

For the ground, I used a method I found on Antenociti's Workshop a while back, and always meant to try out. Instead of spreading glue on the boards, and then sprinkling sand over it, you sprinkle the sand first, and then spray it with diluted white glue several times. When this has dryed, another coat of diluted (and in this case, dyed) PVA can be brushed on. I quite like the effect, especially at the roadsides, where the sand has blown over the street.

At the moment, I think it is still way too dark, but I guess that can be mended with a few more coats of water, PVA and paint.

Now I'm still struggling with the surface of the industrial yard. I don't want a uniform concrete surface, but something more diversified, with a mixture of concrete, tarmac and paving. I thought about using plaster with a bit of sand mixed in, which is then sanded even, letting the sand show through. But I guess plaster might be a bit fragile if it isn't protected by PVA or something. Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Nice! I like the ground color (as far as I can tell from the pictures) and will only do a light colored drybrush over it if it’s possible.

For your concrete, tarmac, pavement, etc have you thought of using sheet of different grade of sand paper? I think it could work well.

* Edit; I forget to ask what scale are the figures on the board and who make them? I’m curious, I know ;)

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

I am always a bit uneasy about using sandpaper, as it usually wreaks havoc on toppling minis, but I might use this again. What I liked about the plaster thing was that you could so easily simulate cracks in the concrete parts.

The figures are 28-30, quite in scale with the Copplestone and Foundry Street Violence stuff. Some of my latest attempts, as is the car in the background 8)

For tarmac.

In the past I have painted the board matt black with exterior black undercoat.

I have then thrown, gypsum plaster, and cement (as unmixed powders) and a bit of builders sand at the board.

The powders soak up the colour and give a bit of texture.

when it is dry its still a bit dark, so empty a teaspoon full of clay based cat litter (unused) over it and crush it with the palm of your hand and then brush it over with your hand ....

Bungle, I'll give that a try, thanks.

Today's progress (at least part of it)

Looking very nice, I like the concrete slab effect. Is it just painted on or do you have cracks between each slab?

At the moment, it is not painted at all. The slabs were done with individual pieces, with sand in and around the gaps. The sand was simply sprinkled on the gaps, partially blown away, and then fixated with a spray-on of diluted white glue. The cobbles are a nice textured wallpaper (in fact, the concrete slabs are the same wallpaper, just turned around).

One and a half more to do, then on to the painting...

Finished the groundworks on three of the six:

The black sqares are entrance hatches to some underground maze, primed black. During game, they could be used to travel from one to the other without risking being shot.

I'm still struggling a bit with the earth parts. I want to depict something vaguely northern European, but I'm not really sure I want to cover the whole surface in grass, which seems to be the most common around here. Maybe I'll try drybrushing green for some more vegetal look than brown dirt, and add some static grass and flock here and there.

The modules don't look like they can be rearanged, but the you say there are six, so maybe we're missing the missing two links that will make them re-arangeable (if thats a word at all?).

Dijit, you've struck a nerve there :) I carefully planned the layout for a maximum of rearrangeability, and came up with quite a few possibilities. Then I added height levels, and most of them were gone. And then I added floor textures to the concrete/paved parts, and most of those left were gone as well. I can't really say how many possibilities of combining the boards are left, but variation can still be achieved with buildings, fences, and other not-fixed stuff.

Uti, I'll reopen the shop as soon as my provider answers my calls or emails regarding the server move he announced to me in ... March. I am getting a bit unpatient here myself. If you are interested, I can take pictures of the available segments, and post them here.

Uti, I'll take the pics this weekend. In the meantime, here is an impromptu setup with the buildings I have at hand, and a few accessories:
