Hail Caesar - Depth of Units
« on: May 23, 2019, 06:02:51 PM »
Hello!

I'm really confused with the depth of units. On page 16 the tables contain a row with 3 deep Infantry , but I found no 3 deep unit in the book or the army lists. It seems there is only the standard 2 deep Infantry and the 4 deep for warbands and pike phalanxes. Am I right?

Cheers

Wellington

Its quite a while since I played, but base depth, and figure counts, have little impact on the rules.

Base width matters, and as you note warband units are deeper, and therefore harder to manoeuvre

As I understand it, and the way we play it is that 3 deep units are for spear armed phalanx such as Greeks and Carthaginians and similar.  Pike Phalanxes used by the Macedonians etc. are in 4 ranks.  All other formed units are in two ranks.

However as Wellington says the depth doesn't matter for the rules but for the look of it we think that gives us a good visualisation on the table top.
