Tintin Destination Moon Rocket in 28mm scale?
« on: June 02, 2019, 06:00:43 PM »
Any recommendations for a garage kit or something similar that would work for a Tintin "Destination Moon" rocket in wargaming scale?

Would a 1/35 V2 work scale-wise?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions...

A V2 could be a good starting point, yeah. You'd have to make your own fins, including the pods and rounded ends though.

A 1/35 V2 with modified fins might work for 6 or 10mm. It's not that big, the Tintin rocketship is huge.

There are actually a couple of (pricey) resin kits of the proper item, can be found here, for example:

https://www.xfueru.com/en/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=tintin+rocket&submit_search=

The shape is actually quite simple. I would estimate a proper-looking size to be around 30-36", maybe 24" if you can disguise it somewhat (e.g. launch tower). You could turn the body and the feet on a slightly larger lathe, and add fins from a robust material such as perspex/acrylic.

Another option would be to build it from paper. The checker pattern could help disguise the edges where you'd have to glue individual segments together. Designing it to that spindly shape would be the trickiest part, and of course it wouldn't be perfectly smooth.

I had a commission last November for one and I used item's very similar to these.
I made a plaster cast of the glass section and resin cast the replacement body in two resin casts. You can also use the plaster mould to make a simple 'vac press' in heated plasticard.
It cost me less than £30 from start to finish.

The ball point pen rockets look like they would work great of 6mm.  Too bad their not available in the US.

Oh wait, they are availble in the US and they are a little larger than I first thought, so they would also work for a small 15mm rocketship.

I keep finding these in second hand shops...
I still have plans to use them for some Flash Gordon type of game.

I am sure they can be found online.

You could look at Rocket shaped shelves then you could have interior action as well, there are some really nice once out there.

Wound up going smaller scale, and getting a friend to 3D print one for me. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Greatly appreciated.

Now if you'd mentioned you had access to a 3D printer this would have been a very short thread lol

Well I’ve been looking without much success - what’s the one on the left? It looks like it might be a water jug or kettle?

Cheers

The red childrens rocket is an ELC(early learning centre) I can't remember the name of the other although I've both in the loft as we've not fostered any mini peeps that small for a while.alternatively I found this( links just doesn't work from my phone.)
The item number is in the pic. Theses worked out at just short of £8 including p&p for the 40cm print.
Found another seller doing exactly the same print at £55.
