The Cowrie of Coumba
« on: June 11, 2019, 02:27:43 PM »
We played a fun game of Congo last night. One of the two scenarios published in WI a while ago.
In this one, the white men have stolen the sacred Cowrie from the forest tribes and are fleeing back toward their riverboat as night falls. The white men's column enters exhausted and in a state of confusion, hotly pursued by the vengeful tribesmen, who include a contingent of pygmies led by the pygmy king. The sacred cowrie is carried by a bearer with a group of adventurers; the explorer is with the ruga-ruga, and the kirangozi guides the trained askaris.
The adventurers got off to a head start, but the pursuers caught the other groups. The pygmy warriors proving particularly devastating with their ability to throw spears and move (we assumed this allows them to charge as that is just a type of move).
The tribes used their ability to place groups in terrain features as they turned up the numbered counters to put some warriors near the river bank, but these were shot up by the adventurers, and as night fell great confusion ensued (during night turns, visibility is low, groups who pick up the pace take stress, and groups out of sight of friends also do so as the terrors of the jungle take hold). A leopard appeared and mauled a group of Askaris; it then slunk off and later attacked the pygmies who made short work of it.
Eventually two groups of the white men made it to the boat with the cowrie, but many of the column were slaughtered and it was a win  for the forest tribes. Another great game.

The soldiers and trained askaris are harrassed by the Pygmy warriors led by the pygmy king

The adventurers and askaris make it to the steamer.

Looks like a fun game. We've not played that scenario yet, but it's on the cards. I've also found the Pygmy warriors to be a very useful addition to my forest tribe column!
