Yet another game of CLASH of Spears ( #clashofspears ).

Syracuse and Carthage are at war and the Greek forces have surrounded the Carthaginian Army camp near the river Crimissus.

The Carthaginians are trying to get supplies to the camp by sending multiple small columns trying to dodge picket forces, but this particular column has been intercepted and they will have to fight their way through.

You probably know what will happen a few days later at Crimissus but at least today the Carthaginians still have hope !!

You can have a look at the AAR here:  http://www.thewargamespot.com/getting-supply-to-the-carthaginian-camp-near-crimissus/

Here you can see the 800 points armies used. This was a slightly larger game than our standard 600 points and the two armies where ad-hoc forces rather than muster. This was because I wanted to use some extra elite troops like cretan archers or balearic slingers :)

The Greeks: a couple of hoplite units, peltasts, some mercenary peltasts, cretan archers and some cavalry.

The Carthaginians: a unit of hoplites, a smaller unit of veteran armored hoplites, two units of Gauls, some Libyan javelin men and Balearic slingers. Escorting the supply column.

Thanks, that will feed our need for updates for a while.
I can see several ways I would use these rules: 5th century Sicily; amphibious operations in the later Persian Wars or Peloponnesian War; minor cities in the Chersonesus fighting barbarian peoples of the hinterland.

For early Sicily what figures are best used for Carthaginians and what would you use for Sicels?
Any suggestions for Phoenician marines?

Wow those are great ideas...

I'm building my Syracusans with Victrix greeks mixing some of the boxes...

For my Carthaginians I wanted veterans but not romanized so they can be for Sicily so I took some greeks with the musculata metal armor from the victrix boxes of greeks and gave them carthaginians heads and carthaginian shield transfers .. I think they look good...  ( for now in my games my Sicilians rely excessively on these Spartan hoplites :) because my other guys are not ready yet.. :) )

Marines... mm, interesting...  Maybe we can use some of the minis that they are doing for mortal gods ?  Two mortal gods warbands can easily work for  CLASH and our rules are totally base agnostic so you can use them with whatever bases you use for Mortal Gods...

For Sicels, oh that is tough.. don't know... List wise we can probably use the lists from the italian tribes, but for figures I really don't know, let me know what you come up with... a bit of imagination will probably be needed given that it might be hard to find very specific data...

Those are really great ideas for CLASH games, thanks for that !!

cheers

"Island hopping/coastal raids" with marines could allow for quite varied enemies - Egyptian marines, Phoenicians, Carians, Lydians, Persians, Thracians, Macedonians.  Campaigning in Acarnania.
A couple of ships would offload around 20 hoplites, 8 archers and some oarsmen as psiloi.  Sounds about right for your rules.

For Sicels I thought of Oscans/Samnites with hoplite shields but most figures have helmets from around the 3rd Century.  Iberians may be another option, or Illyrians.  Likewise, many Carthaginian helmets seem too modern for 5th century.  Will need to think about this.....

Brilliant...

Wouldn’t you think that the thracian style carthaginian helmets should work even for 5-4 century BC ?

I really like your idea...  I’m eager to get to when we release the rules and see what cool ideas people come up with..

For now we need to concentrate on the demos for Historicon next week...

cheers

Always thought Thracian and Phrygian helmets were later, but I see I know nothing  :'(

I will cease any more postings about helmets so as not to  detract further from your report.

Excellent report! I am going to try another Dark Ages game shortly. This time a party of Viking raiders will be busy plundering an Anglo-Saxon village, when the local Earl appears with a bunch of angry Huscarles to punish the Northmen. The Vikings will have the advantage in numbers, but they will be dispersed throughout a wide area; the Anglo-Saxons will have an edge in quality and will be concentrated, but they will be few in numbers. Will see how it works!
