Advice on Miniature Storage
« on: July 04, 2019, 02:09:52 AM »
Looking itno buying a box or something to store all my different lead piles from various prjects so I ahve just one sitting on the taable as I paint, not sure what to get though, was thinking about this fellow;

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-12015-30-Part-Organiser-Cabinet/dp/B0038XQZZK/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=storage&qid=1562202238&rnid=1642204031&s=diy&sr=1-16

...but am unsure if it is too small.

Any advice? What do other people use to store their 'bare' lead?

I store my minis in paper bags from the liquor store, just toss them and then sharpie what’s in the bag.  lol

I use old cigar boxes & stack them on shelves. I have about 3 shelve sets full, and that is just figures.

Have been eyeing the KLINGSBO Glass-door cabinet, black, clear glass from Ikea for ages, but don't have the space. :(

Steel frame and tempered glass and each shelf could hold 15lbs/7kgs of minis...

No space? I live in a 525sft condo and have three bikes hanging from my wall, and could have Klingsbos all over my corners

Back on topic, Kommando J, how many unpainted miniatures do you have? What scale are they and across how many periods?

I keep my lead piles in box files along side the painted troops in each army. Not in bags but open shallow boxes such as you get from the Perrys or cut out from blister packs. I find this encourages me to get them painted. If they were all together in one big pile on my painting table, I think I would find it demoralising even if organised into a compartmented box.

I mainly use 4l RUB, some with the inserts, and some plain, in these I keep the figures in bags.

Those drawers look nice, and will be good to see what you have. But it does depend on how many figures you have - to me they look on the small side.

8 or 9 different periods/projects, all in 28mm, the lead pile on my desk has been cleared but I am running out of space and it is demoralising me. I've not enought painted stuff to justify a dispaly cabinet.

That.
Or in the past I’ve used these:

I have a similar but larger multi drawer box (metal frame with 20 small drawers and 2 full width deep drawers of plastic.
I used to store unpainted microtanks in it but it soon became too small so now it is relegated to being a "bits box" for unused plastic kit bits and small scenic/basing items.

I use any sturdy low cardboard boxes with lids that I can scrounge, (PC component boxes are ideal but cut down shoeboxes at a push). Anything that can stack without crushing the boxes below.
But as a primarily 6mm or 15mm gamer my lead pile count does run to several thousand. :-X

One tip: add a few desiccant sachets.  Helps prevent lead rot by ensuring low humidity on storage.

I use Sterilite boxes which are less expensive version of the 4L RUB for both painted and unpainted. Keep each project in it's own box. As you paint them you may find you need some more boxes as the painted lead take up more room also keep in mind the height of the figure as flags, pikes and cavalry will need a deeper box.

I use plastic boxes. The kind you can store beads in. I sort everything into the boxes, later I will prime them and then paint them. Then I label the box and catalog its contents on my computer. Larger things are stored in plastic bins in the same fashion. Here is a picture of part of my collection. You cannot see the labels but I assure you they are there.  ;D
