Rapid fire - Fall of France 1940, allied victory
« on: July 07, 2019, 08:30:35 AM »
Yesterday we played out a 20mm world war 2 game, using Rapid Fire rules.
Played at my place “Bob’s Bunker”, with all 7 of us available for the first time.
Has.been did a great job umpiring and didn’t get uppity once, we’ll maybe it was twice ( only joking Pete, thanks for running it).
We had a scenario where German paras had been dropped and had captured the French petrol station, in the middle of the French town. They were now just waiting for the German panzers to roll in for a refuel.
Little did the Germans know, that a strong French and British armoured force, were waiting, just around the corner.

German paras holding the captured petrol station.

German ground forces enter the field of battle. My armoured unit on the left and Garry’s armoured unit on the right.
Those 4 French tanks coming out of the town should be a problem....should they ???

French tanks coming out to play.

View from the German turrets....no problem.

I hold the left hand side of the table with my German forces, taking on French tanks and now British armour too, whilst Garry’s German forces on the right, have a lovely stroll through the woods (or as Garry was later heard to say, he was “taking his objective”)

Allied armour getting closer.

Back in the town centre, the French have rolled out the big guns (2 off Char b) to sort out the German paras in the petrol station. Oh heck...

“Don’t worry chaps, we’ve got this all under control.”

French char b’s ease around the town to outflank the paras, only to find German armour creeping thro the woods.

More allied armour turn up on the left hand side, and start knocking out my German tanks.

Now more and more British armour turns up basting holes in my German armour.

Here I end up running for cover with my Germans.

Char b and British 2pdr just wait for German armour to break out of the woods.

British foot troops close on the pars.

British armour on the romp...gulp

End game...Allied victory.

Great game, played in the right spirit.

No mention of the first 2pdr firing from a concealed position, at short range and....
 Vodkafan throwing a ONE!!!!
The Germans had more tanks on the table at the start, & the best allied tanks,
the 2 Char Bis, didn't venture far during the game.
Unfortunately the Germans misunderstood the main point of 'concentration'
They should have concentrated their armour & picked off the allies piecemeal,
instead Garry concentrated on sneaking through the wood slowly, while Flatpack
concentrated on recreating his own version of the charge of the light brigade,
tanks to the left of him, tanks to his right....
Much fun was had.
Flatpack was telling us that he has been preparing for this game (Fall of France with
Rapid Fire) for a very long time. Nice to see yet another project reaching the table.
Well done Bob.

I was the player in charge of the British Infantry and 2 Pdr battery. Much fun was had not least because the umpire stipulated that the British and French players could ONLY converse and discuss the game in FRENCH.
Our Command and Control suddenly got very difficult! Just trying to explain which building I was going to place the Brit HQ in became hilarious.
I spoke to him once in English and we got penalized with a Stuka attack which brewed up a Vickers light tank.
The British and French armoured units did a great job, I think has.been is right that the German players made a mistake by splitting their armour.
I have some reservations about Rapid Fire! rules, but it's the first time we have played them so it would be unfair for me to comment on that aspect. They did the job for the occasion!
Many thanks to Flatpack for letting us play in his bunker once again and feeding us, and to has.been for all the work studying the rules, umpiring and providing the QRF sheets.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

 Lads, thanks for the comments.
I find with all of this, it’s the sprit in which you play the game that counts.
For the comment from the chap that said, great figures, but poor that food and drink was on the table, thanks......l’m glad you enjoyed the figures, and I’m glad my mates enjoyed the food and drink. Obviously I can’t win all the time,  as I’m taking photos as the game rolls on, whilst doing an “all day buffet”.
As for the game, Rapid Fire rules did the job on the day.

Cracking looking game, vehicles and terrain! Where are the buildings in the town from? I feel I vaguely recognise them...

Nice table ! I noticed that rapid fire tables are great most of the time  :)

I've got the ruleset, but never played it. It seems to be the kind of game wich is easier to enjoy with some rules veterans ?

The buildings are mine and come from a wide variety of places:-
Andy Dumelow (when he still ran his business in Burton); bring & buys;
charity shops & model railway swap meets. All have had work done, some
have had a lot of work done. My personal favourite is the bombed pissoir,
half of which is a Wiles model railway kit & the other half scratch built.
I like it when someone captures it, then they really are taking the p*##.
Posters are parts of adverts cut out of Sunday supplements.

Flatpack has a similar amount & I originally thought that too would be on
the table. He (quite rightly) decided too many streets would not go with
a lot of tanks. We would have lived to 'Rue' that day.    (I'll get me coat)

It was a fine game and as Le Commander of the French I would just like to point out it was 'mes braves' who put paid to the 'les boche' in the town and then rolled out with the tanks across the plain to brew up the Nazi tin cans.
The communicating in 'franglais' was great fun and an excellent period feel from Pete.
For a first outing I rather liked Rapid Fire although I did find the sight of the tanks charging across the terrain slightly perplexing, I guess its a scale thing.
Many thanks to Bob for hosting and providing the figures.

Loved the pictures, a lot of very familiar models I have myself.  Really good to see this scale on LAF.
