Who do those ancient model railroad figures represent?
« on: July 23, 2019, 05:56:09 AM »
I recently painted some 1:60 or thereabouts model railroad figures. And I can't escape the impression that at least some of them were modelled on existing persons. Those would be people in the sixties, since their dress suggests they were made in the early sixties at the latest.

Does anyone know who they represent? Queen Elizabeth seems obvious.

No character really jumps out at me . To be honest even the one identified as possibly the Queen is a bit tenuous to me. Back in the 60's everyone's Auntie had a pink wool coat like that  lol
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Ah, but Phil the Greek is famous for keeping his hands behind his back, presumably as he otherwise couldn't resist back-slapping, head-patting or the occasional upper-cut?

Having said tha,t my Old Man habitually wandered about like that all the time, and now I find I'm doing it now too...

Can't see any other obvious tropes, chap in the caddish brown suit?

The Queen also wouldn't have had grey hair in the 60's.  She was only in her thirties/forties.

Considering Pijlie painted them that probably has little relevance to the identification of the models, if there is one.

Those are stock Preiser figure poses, produced in a wide variety of scales.
I doubt that they were anybody specific, just generally representative of the period.

Chap in the brown three piece appears to be playing pocket billiards. Maybe it was a cheeky nod towards Ray Reardon? Ray did have a bit more of a widows peak IIRC, so perhaps it's Eddie Charlton or John Spencer instead?

Pretty generic figures. A lot of the 1/87 railway and 1/50 architectural  figures date from the  sixties and seventies. I don't suppose your average model train enthusiast has detected the subtle changes in fashion since then, although velcro shoe fastenings and elasticated waistbands do seem to have taken off with most of 'em  :)
