Well, it isn’t a space ship, but those caves do look quite good.  :D

The cargo stuff looks great! But Those caves are Awesome! I can see a lot of gaming options with those.

Thanks all. The walls are very sturdy. more so in places where I've either done a paper mache treatment, or built up the slope with foam board, but even in the relatively unmolested areas they are coated with a hefty amount of clear gesso which leaves the walls and other surfaces with a fantastic amount of texture in a more organic and less gritty manner than texture paste alone. The added benefit in this case is that it also has a thick coating similar to dried glue, but with the ability to hold peaks and ridges where glue tends to drip and not hold in thick applications.

Spray foam is scary. Every time I've used it (usually to keep bees out of my garage) it makes a most tremendous mess.  lol Could be user error, and nobody has accused me of being light handed or subtle  ::)

That's a good one Cook.  :D :D :D
Then they're ok , I like them...

Exp foam does have a mind of it's own & will make a tremendous mess , as you say,
BUT if controlled with the use of fences, moulds, masking tape etc..... it can make splendid terrain if planning is done.
And I'm not known for being gentle either , more like a bull in a china shop sometimes  ;D.....

You can look here for some examples, ( The ones that didn't make the grade where recycled )  some were made in moulds ,some built bit by bit with small spurts and dappling dots with skewers , others with a spatula or made into turds as some remarked ..... YOU CAN DO IT, YES YOU CAN ....... ;)

That is some nice stuff there, I don't know if you had noticed but the rock formation right there on the lift looks a little like a "Toad". It could be used as a land make   :D

It does , doesn't it ?
You're sharp eyed WM, I didn't notice it...
"Toad rock " from now on.....

Come to think of , that's where some place names come about. Good to keep in mind when writing fluff. ;)

Oh btw Cook,  I wanted to add, first spray a blob of foam on a piece of non stick material ( though that can be difficult as foam sticks to almost everything!!!) then use this as your palette.
It can also be used to stiffen cloth.

Thanks
Z

What size tiles did you use for your cave project?

Next up I've been working on a set of ten genre/scale agnostic cave tiles. I finally have the first three painted:

And, not sci-fi but some 15mm figures for scale:

I figure set dressing will define the genre and scale. Otherwise the caves are just dirt and rock. For the purpose of my sci-fi gaming, I imagine this will serve as the interior of an asteroid mining operation.

I love the idea of an asteroid mine!!!

Now that would be a great idea Dan.

The asteroid mine's tunnels could be built with balls of cured foam or foam can be formed round a balloon or latex/nitrile glove or similar ( though foam may burst the balloon... hmm have to experiment ..be careful it doesn't throw foam everywhere !!!!)

Or pvc pipes ( sawn along the length) can be used for the general assembly, tees, elbows & easy bends are cheap & available. Could use reducers also... the sky's the limit ....

Pity foam can't be melted with solvents but normal foam can....e .g. those balls used by florists can be used to build outcrops etc.

Ideas, ideas to much to try too little time.... :(

Basically like I did here but using the inside of the pipe

Good bit of inspiration being tossed about in here!

The tiles for the caves are 6" square, so the longest continuous length I could get is 3' of tunnel, roughly, with some side branches. I figure that the caves, unlike tiles for outdoors space, wouldn't often me stacked in squares. In fact, it would be difficult to make a 4-square pattern the way I designed the tiles. I do need to make a couple small tunnel caps, or perhaps a tunnel collapse piece to do with this set. Since doors are a standard width, I could pretty easily build something that would fit in a doorway to block it up.

Been a while since I visited LAF, you've made great progress during this time. Love those cave corridors!

I may have to play around with some polymer clay to see if I can make some interesting stalagmites for something like this the more I think about it.

Welcome back, Ockman! Where have you been hiding?

I have considered making some scatter stalagmites for the cave, or perhaps just some piles of rock (fell from the ceiling?) to drop into a space to break it up a bit. For a sci-fi mining scene I purchased some Ore bins from Ramshackle games a while back. What I need now is some kind of anti-grav mine cart to lug them around. These are the ore bins, but I don't see them on the Ramshackle site anymore.  ???

I got all the cave insides (the other seven) base painted and dry brushed. Now I need to go back and paint the outsides black and hit the rocks with a couple layers of grey to make them stand out. Should have the whole set done no later than Thursday. I'm trying to prioritize this so I can check it off my list of things to do.

Welcome back, Ockman! Where have you been hiding?

Thanks, Andrew!

Me and my wife have decided to move back to my hometown. This has shown to be a lot of work (finding new jobs for both of us, finding a preschool for the children, selling our current apartment, buying a new one that isn't built yet, finding a rental to live in until the new apartment is built, sort and sell stuff we can't bring, and so on and so on...)

There hasn't been much time left after working and studying, being a parent and a good partner. Hobby stuff has not been prioritized.

But I have built a new tile for my city, you can see a sneak peek in my thread!
