A conversation about gaming in smaller spaces
« on: July 14, 2019, 06:25:51 AM »
I recently did a blog post on the practicalities of gaming in a small space and it has garnered a few interesting comments. My blog essentially is built up around the notion of gaming in a small space, but recent events have encouraged me to re-double my efforts in keeping the blog true to that ethos. Anyway, a link for anyone interested.

Having had a bad back in the past I know what a misery it can be. I think your small spaces approach makes a lot of sense to avoid bending and stretching over a big table. I am interested in what sort of games you will come up with for the future, it is a good theme for a blog for sure.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

I personally think the ideal gaming table is 24x24 inches, or possibly 24x48. Anyone can put that in any space.

This precludes obvious massive battles unless in 6mm, or taking the smallest vignette in 28mm.

But I am a strong advocate for small space gaming.

A friend planned to do 54mm Bastoyne on a 3' square.
He wanted to go to town on the scenic side, snow. icicles,
knocked out half track etc. but only have about a dozen
figures on the table during a game. Real life ( a drop in income)
stopped it being done, however the idea does intrigue.

I have been a 4x6 foot table gamer for many years, and in my current house that's doable but pretty tight. Several of the games I've played recently are 3x3 or so, and I just started playing Rangers of Shadow Deep which is 2.5 x 2.5 feet. At first I thought that was ridiculously small but it's actually been pretty fun and I'm starting a bunch of terrain boards for that size.

I'm digging 3x3 boards- I have 3 of them. On 2x2 or 2.5 by 2.5 you could really pack a lot of detail.

I’ve been playing A Gentleman’s War with my 40mm imagi-nation figures on a 3x5 table recently, which works much better than I would have expected...
