I had hoped to have completed the command stand of the MacDonald Clanrandald chaps this weekend but an illness bug seen to the end of that. Here are some pictures of the Royal Ecossais I completed.

The Regiment was formed a single Battalion by John Drummond of Perth on 1st August 1744. Their organisation was based on that of the Irish Regiments already in French service.

Small detachments of the Regiment were present at the Battle of Inverurie 23rd December 1745 and the Battle of Falkrik 17th February 1746, positioned in the Centre of the 2nd Line. They had roughly 100 men at Falkirk and the rest of the regiment remained at the Siege of Stirling Castle where along with the Irish Regiments they suffered many casualties.

They took part in the sieges of Fort Augustus and Fort William during March 1745. Culloden was the first time the entire battalion fought as one. During the campaign, they had suffered many casualties due to disease but were still able to muster 350 men at Culloden. They were not involved in the disastrous Highland charge Scotland but did cover the retreat of the Highland right wing.

Clan MacDonald of Clanranald

The Clan was present at Glenfinnan when the Prince raised his standard. The Princes first landed in Clanranald island of Eriskay. The Old Clan Chief Ranald was not fit to meet the Prince, so the meeting passed to his brother Alasdair MacDonald of Boisdale. Boisdale was cautious to support the Rising and told the Prince, “you had better go back and go home – and get ready more men, more ammunition, more money and more food”. To which the Prince replied, “I have come home, Boisdale”.

The Prince better support from the Young Clanranald Son, Ranald and he raised his men and were present at Glenfinnan. The clan was part of the Rising from the start to the finish and paid dearly for it with many of them dying or being transported.

At Falkirk, they were 350 strong and I have made them similar Keppoch’s with 3 bases and 18 figures. The Clan is being led by a Claymore wield young Colonel that I have designated at the Young Ranald using his Fathers Claymore used in the previous Risings. The Clan standard is tattered from the campaign and fighting.

Ranald was severely wounded at Culloden but managed to escape.
