Do we want 28mm Austrians and Russians?
« on: July 21, 2019, 02:38:16 PM »
There seems to be a lack of availability of these two forces, at least for the European market. The Austrians especially have tempted me to give a go at. There is plenty of potential given there is interest in them done in early war style. So, basically testing here to check for enthusiasm.

So, how many would buy and or potentially support commissioning these armies? How about starting with the Austrians? ;)

Always in favour of more Austrians - criminally underrated force!

I know it is not Europe, but WEE WOLF miniatures just came out with a new
range of Austrians in the US. I picked up some at Historicon 2019. They are very
nice miniatures. They also have a nice range of Russians.
I know this doesn't help the British and European gamers because of the high
import fees. Sorry.

I was his about to mention the old footsore line of Russians and had forgotten that they had sold them off. So nice to learn who picked them up.
As for Austrians I belive brigade games in the U.S. has a small range, done up in the early war style.
I'll let you judge if you think the line can be improved on.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

I am as many aware of these being available in the US, but the import fees I believe is a barrier to many a collector/gamer. It has been brought up quite a few times. Its a very nice range in its own right, only lacking in artillery crew and cavalry. A new range for the European market would have its own style of course. Separate heads would be a noticeable difference. Depending on the interest, Bosnian and Polish units could also be given attention.

I believe the Copplestone White Russians are probably okay for WW1 Russians?

It is the Austrians that are lacking in the UK. I recall Renegade did a limited range but they have closed for the time being.

Scarab do an extensive Late War range but their figures are not everyone’s cup of tea.

They can be used, but they are quite large figures so they may not be compatible with other brands. There are varied opinions on that matter, what won't work for some will for others.

My question would be what brands do you want yours to be compatible with?

Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Tsuba miniatures Russians?

The Old Glory WW1 Russians are not bad at all. I have the ones in greatcoat and the mix well with Brigade and others

They will be sculpted by Steve Barber and would Imo be compatible with Empress and GWM. Here is a scale comparison from my collection of an Empress German next to a Steve Barber French:

First difference I can think of is that in ww1 they had peaked caps unlike the Russo-Japanese War. There were several updates to the uniform from 1905 until the outbreak of ww1.

Indy has a good take on their uniform during the war:

1914 regulation:

To get the project of either or both armies started would require support. The more joining the merrier, and not only easens the cost but speeds up the progress.

Commission prices are as following:

170£ for an infantry figure with head attached,
150£ without head, using separate for greater variety.
A head mould with 24 slots is 150£ and could provide headpacks of 12 individual heads for Russians and Austrians each. Or two separate units for one nation like standard Austrians with their cap and Bosnians with the fez.

To make it bearable for all involved I think its best doing one figure at a time. And make gradual progress.

If you are part of commissioning a sculpt you get a 10% discount on all future purchases for that figure.

Anyone who wants to get involved supporting Austrians, Russians or both may contact steve at:
enquiries@stevebarbermodels.com.
Feel free to send me a PM as well for any questions.

He also runs a commission a miniatures group on facebook that is useful for sharing ideas and communicating ideas for poses. If interested he can send you an invite.)

We are reasonably well-served here in the US by the Brigade line of figures.
